Question about 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis

1995 Grand marquis: The battery light comes on and the steering and the brakes get hard. The serpentine belt seems to be ok. Is it possible that it could be slipping? or maybe does it just need more tension?

Belt is slipping. may need a new self tensioner if it's a self tensoin system. There is a mark on the self tensioner that has to be in the OK range.

Power Steering reservoir leaking and dripping on Serpentine Belt, possible cause of loose belt movement (has come off once already). Wobble of A/C Pulley, resulting in A/C not cooling.

Power steering pump shaft seal is leaking, You can add a table spoon of DOT 3 brake fluid to the steering fluid to condition the seal. The A/C pulley wobble is a compressor clutch bearing problem and requires the correct puller to replace. Replace the clutch as a unit, to avoid messing with the bearing. Replace the belt if the steering fluid leak stops. If the brake fluid trick does not work, replace the steering pump. Parts and labor will be better than 200.00

How do I replace the Airconditioning/power steering belt on a Grand marquis, Mercury(1992)? please show me in a diagram or print somehow

Move the Grand Marquis's serpentine belt tensioner off the serpentine belt with the serpentine belt tool. Pull the belt of the remaining pulleys by hand. Take the belt out of the engine well. Wrap the new belt around the bottom portion of the crankshaft pulley. Follow the belt routing diagram to route the belt over each remaining pulley until only the tensioner remains. Move the Grand Marquis's serpentine belt tensioner aside once more and slip the belt onto the tensioner pulley.Hold the belt in place with one hand while you move the tensioner slowly back into position with the other. Here you can fine the quality AC parts

My 99 Grand Marquis was a gift from my grandmother. With 104k mi. I am confused by apparent symptoms that all seem to be tied to 1 main cause. Possibly a control box or computer is causing AC, power...

The best thing for you to do is go to Autozone, Oreillys, or another parts store where they give FREE scans of the onboard computer. The onboard computer should have some information in it.

Some of your problems can be related but more information would be needed in your description.

First, the Power steering is not connected to the Brakes, Transmission, and only shares the Serpentine belt with the A/C. The Power steering is a hydraulic system. Check the fluid level for the Power steering as well as the Brake fluid and the Antifreeze levels. Exactly what is the car doing when you steer it?

Second, Braking- Does it stop? Is it making any noise and what does the noise sound like? Is there a Warning light on in the dash?

Third, the Transmission. Check the Trans fluid level with the engine warm. Now the Trans does have Electric controls which can be computer controlled and they are linked to the Engine controls. How is it shifting?

Fourth, the A/C. Worry about the first 3 things unless you have no heat or blower control. The AC is a Luxury and it won't stop you from driving the car. It is easier to diagnose once you describe the symptoms and has little effect on the Engine controls.

This model is a very good car. Gas mileage was good to excellent, they are comfortable and dependable. Once you fix this car it will stay fixed. They easily run 200,000 to 250,000 miles.
Parts are available at Salvage yards and most every part is available in lower cost aftermarket parts. Every shop has worked on them, they are used for Taxis and Police cars.

Go to get the scan AS IS. Do not disconnect the Battery. Let it run its own crummy way so when you scan it the problems can be caught. If the car has set for a time, the gas may be flat.

My battery light comes on and steering wheel locks up. What could this be?

Steering wheel locks up? or does it get very hard to steer? If it gets very hard to steer sounds like your Serpentine belt is slipping. You may have a bad belt tensioner or possibly somthing leaking on belt causing it to slip. The belt runs the alternator and powersteering. Also check condition of the belt itself. Shiny or streached belt could cause it to slip also.

Air suspension on my grand marquis comes on with engine off

What is probably going on is the air suspension has a leak so the compressor is breaking down. So it will run at odd times trying to make up for the times it can not run. What you need to do is look for a conversion kit. The conversion will stop all problems that you are having now and you will never have to worry about it again. I would recommend They have great prices and there kits are guaranteed to last the life of the car. I posted the link below so you can take a look.

I hope I was of some help

Good Luck!!!

Serpentine belt broke and i think the water pump is bad

The battery light and brake light are on because the belt isn't turning the alternator. The house with columns means it is low on antifreeze. You need to put the belt back on an check for antifreeze leaks. I would say you waterpump likely locked up and roasted the belt and that is where the antifreeze is leaking also.
