Question about 2003 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

2003 ponitac sunfire, almost 88,000 miles. Slowly was making a 90 degree curve when loud pounding sound started somewhere in the rear of car. Stopped & put it in park and revered the engine and there was no sound then. In less than 1/4 mile it started again. Like knocking on top of an automatic washing machine. Though car was going to explode. Nothing hanging down under the car. Then got the smell of burning brakes. Drove about 4-5 miles before I could stop. By then the smell was really bad. My son has never replaced rear drum brakes but he has done my front brakes several times. What could problem be and how easy is the fix? Urgent as I need car for medical visits and very limited income. Thank you.

Sounds like a combo condition concerning your rear brakes and wheel bearings, if the noise was or is louder on right turns then left replace the right side wheel bearing and vice versa.Get this car to a shop however immediately as the ABS brake system may be trying to lock up the wheel that may be wobbling causing all sorts of havoc.

What is a normal temperature for my 2003 pontiac sunfire. is 90 too high

It should fall between 200 and 250 degrees F, I take it when you say 90, that means 90 degrees Celsius, that equates to 194 degrees F.

You are within range, actually running little bit cooler, which is GREAT!

I would take it back. If camshaft is damaged, it will be expensive fix. Lifters going bad at 88k indicates neglect.

I need to tighten the bolts on the head what is the difference from lbs and degree. example 22lbs and add 55 degree.

I know...screwy way of doing it but what you do is torque to the specification then turn the wrench 55 degrees more (hint : 1/4 turn is 45degrees, half turn is 90 degrees, one full turn is 360 degrees etc) So on your example you would torque to 22lbs then turn it a bit more than a quarter turn past where you stopped at 22 lbs.

Rear seal links and I only have 88,000 miles. why

Only have 88K??! That is a good amount of miles to have on a car. I know it is a Toyota but things do start to go and things start to leak after a while on all cars. Your car is 10 years old- Its not new anymore. Things will start to leak over time and this is not unheard of. it is pretty much normal. Fix the leak and do regular matinance and you will get another 10 years and anothe 88k miles out of it.

Cly head torque settings

The torque is 44 ft lbs+ 95 degrees. You will have to replace all the head bolts/ one time use only. Working from the center out tighten all to 44 ft lbs. Then from center out again go anothre 95 degrees. Good Luck
