Question about 2002 Oldsmobile Alero
Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft-deterrent system.
Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder has not been tampered with.
During normal operation, the SECURITY light will go off approximately five seconds after the ignition key is turned to ON and the engine is started.
If the SECURITY light flashes with the key to ON, wait 10 minutes until the light goes off. Then turn the ignition to OFF before attempting to start the engine.
In an emergency, call the Oldsmobile Roadside Assistance Center at 1-800-442-OLDS or 1-800-442-6537. (In Canada, call 1-800-268-6800)

Yes. This car has a security system. The key has a chip in it that tells the computer that it is the right key starting the car. There is a computer in the steering column that receives the signal from the key. Sometimes the computer doesn't receive the right signal because the key is failing, the wrong key, or possibly the computer is malfunctioning. But with it working sometimes then I would say that the problem is in the key itself.
