Coolong fan only turns when I supply a ground to the sensor. Where does the ground come from normally?

Cooling fan relay,replace sensor all it does is ground when it reaches operating temp.

The location of a 2002 chevy cavalier cooling fan sensor


The cooling fan is controlled by the PCM - powertrain control module through a relay ! There is no cooling fan sensor , there is a coolant temperature sensor ! This coolant temperature sensor is an input to the engine computer , if there were a problem wit the sensor the check engine light would be on .
Cooling Fan Control
The engine cooling fan system consists of one cooling fan and one relay. The relay is powered by the battery positive voltage circuit and controlled by a switched ground from the powertrain control module (PCM).
During operation, the PCM supplies the ground path for the cooling fan relay through the cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the cooling fan relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and supplies battery positive voltage from the cooling fan fuse through the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the cooling fan. The cooling fan motor is grounded through its own ground circuit.
The PCM commands the fan on under the following conditions:

Engine coolant temperature exceeds approximately 106?°C (223?°F).


?€¢
A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1310 kPa (190 psi).


?€¢
A/C is requested and vehicle speed is below 100 km/h (62 mph) with A/C pressure above 1413 kPa (205 psi).

Vehicle speed is less than 8 km/h (5 mph) for more than 750 seconds. The fan will turn off when vehicle speed is greater than 8 km/h (5 mph) for more than 20 seconds.

My engine is running hot and the coolong fans do not go on


Checking codes would be best. First check the fuses. pull them out and look. Then start the car and turn on the A/C, if the fans come on the replace the coolant sensor, first. If not, the swap the cooling fan relays. Things that could be wrong are fan/s, fuses, relays, wiring, and the computer.

Citroen C4 automatic. After car has been driving then stops, the fan keeps going until battery runs dead. The AA fitted brand new battery but problem persists. Any ideas?


Most "CCC" Or computer comand controlled vehicles supply power to the electircal components automaticaly via a relay, there will be one power source with the ignition off,& a second power sourse when the ignition is turned on,In this case the temp sensor will supply a ground to the cooling fan circuit when the engine temp reaches a specified temperature and the fan comes on. In my opinion you most likely have a relay that has malfunctioned(gotten too hot & fused internaly) find your engine cooling fan relay(s) & remove them.If the fan stops you may have found your problem.to check the power supplied to the relay you will need a simple test light, connect the clip to a good ground & probe the relay socket with the tip of the lights probe. where there is power the test light will light up. Ignition off-1 power source,Ignition on-2 power sources/ to check for the ground supplied by the temp sensor connect the test lights clip to a battary+ source & probe the relay socket again if there is a ground supplied the test light will light up, there may be more than one temp sensor in the cooling system.you should be able to aquir a wiring diagram online if you do not have a book.one of the sensors sends the temp signal to the gauge in the dash, & the other is the ground supply for thr fan relay. I hope I have been of some help.

A mechanic would check the fuses and relays first. The computer grounds the relays to power the fans.

The electric fan that cools my radiator is not running.


The radiator fan should come on when car reaches normal operating temp,With engine at Idle and temp normal feel the top radiator Hose ,it should be hot,If no then Engine coolant is not moving-cause could be an "Air lock" if that is the case,turn key off until it cools then disconnect top Hose and start engine,at normal temp,you should have Engine Coolant coming out,turn key off let engine cool;reconnect and refill with a 50/50 mix;

Back to the Fan problem;the Fan should come on when engine temp is normal,if not turn the Air-Conditioner on,radiator Fan should come on at any temp;two checks ,one is the Fan Relay ,located in the under Hood main power supply box;There will be 3 or 4 relays for different systems since they are of the same part number swap and see if problem is fixed;if no check the Fuse in same power supply box;You said fans spin so they are not locked up;Take an eight dollar D.C. circuit tester,they look like an ice pick with a clamp for ground attach,to ground and with the fan plug disconnected see if you have voltage; ,You can have a continuous fan by finding a wire close to the fan that has power when the key is in the on position,take a wire and attach to that wire;

92 Dodge stealth radiator coolong fan does not turn on. Where is the heat sensor and how do you check to see if it is working?


Look for the obvious first. Blown Fuse, Burned Fan Relay.
To test, disconnect the Fan plug in, run 1 x Pos. and 1 x Neg. of 12 or 14 gauge wire from the Battery, directly to the Fan Motor, and it should energise.
The Sensor for the Fan is on the Engine. This is a 2 contact threaded switch,which is Normally open, and make circuit contact copletion when the cooling system heats up, energising the Fan Motor.
This Fan should also operate when the A/c is in operation also, independent of the Coolant side.
[eg] When setting off, from home on a Hot day, the A/c is on , long before the Engine heats up

Cooling fans inop 2002 grand prix


Couple things.
Temp. sensor may be shot, which usually tells fans to kick on at appropriate temp. Fan may be physically shot from usage. With car OFF, see if you can spin blade FREELY. It shouldn't turn hard at all, if so, fan bearings shot. Hard to say if MIL is related to this.

Where is the coolong fan sensor? my fan does not come on at all unless i run the ac.


are you having a overheating issue if not it turns on automatically up to a certain engine temp.
