Question about 1999 Honda CR-V

1999 Honda CRV A/C

The A/C compressor in my 1999 Honda CRV is cutting on and off when the A/C button is on. The compressor is fine when the car is running and the idle is up but when stopped at a traffic light you have to press the A/C button off because the compressor starts cutting on and off and the car idles too low. I've read several message boards with similar problems. At this point I am not running the air in fear that I will have metal fragments through the entire system. Do you think the compressor needs to be replaced or the clutch? I know the CRV's seem to have A/C problems but as far as I could tell it did not include the 1999 model.

The compressor is supposed to cycle on and off. The idle problem may not be the compressor but the solenoid that controls the idle when the compressor is engaged. A bad clutch would present in different ways, i.e. metallic scraping noise. I doubt at this point you are damaging the system by running the a/c.

I have this same problem. Took it to the shop. They said it's not the A/C but the distributor assembly needs to be replaced. It is causing the cylinders to mis-fire and thus the low idle.

If you check the American boards you will find that the compressor has been a problem in the 99 model.

  1. You have to hit your unlock button a second time to unlock the other doors. If you know this and are, and it's only the one door that's not working, then you need a power door lock actuator replaced. It's attached to the latch inside the door and unlocks and lock the door.
  2. Not sure what a burring sound is, but if you're describing what it sounds like then it could be the A/C clutch, but you also have to remember that you should notice the RPMs on a CR-V drop about 500rpm when the A/C compressor clutch engages. That's normal. If it's making a funny sound, you need to have a Honda dealer check it out, they will know for sure if it's normal or not.

My 2002 Honda CRV will start up and then immediately stall at idle. If I keep the gas down it will run fine, but once I release the gas, the engine cuts out. What could be going on to cause this problem?

This sounds like a classic vacuum leak problem. Check under hood to make sure all the hoses are connected or have someone who knows how do it for you. Locate the air sensor in the fresh air intake stream and make sure there are no leaks between it and the engine.

start your cr-v and let idle for 10 or so seconds in park. shut it off and check the fluid with in 30 seconds. if you check the fluid running it will read low and get overfilled. level ground is also important.

I have a 1999 Honda CRV. In the last week, we've had 100 degree days so I am running the air at top speed...I have noticed that when I am at a stop light or in line at a drive thru, and the car is idling,...

All automobiles do this. The output of the air conditioning compressor is directly proportional to the engine RPM. If your system is low on refrigerant this effect will be magnified. - H H McDonald
