How to Change ignition switch on a 2001 firebird

Ignition switch? or Lock tumblers? Ignition switch is located on top of the base of the steering column. You will need to remove the knee bolster to access the two bolts that hold the column to the bottom of the dash. You will also need to loosen the three bolts that hold the column sealing flange to the firewall. Make sure you disable the SRS system before you start as well. Once the two nuts are removed and the base bolts loosened you should be able to drop the column enough to get to the ignition switch. It is held onto the column with two small bolts that also hold the bright light switch to the column. The bolt holes are slotted and the switches will need to be adjusted when reinstalling them.

How do I remove the key rotating switch from the sterring coloum?

do you mean the ignition switch? sadly, its actually pretty difficult to remove. usually the screws that tighten them on are then purposely broken so the ignition is not tampered with. you'll have to take it to a dealership to get replaced. You can check by removing the plastic from the steering column. there might be 2-3 screws holding the plasic on the bottom of the column. then unclip the plastic. then you'll be able to see the ignition switch and how it is screwed on.

FIRST OF ALL, TURN OFF RADIO,DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. IF EQUIPPED WITH TILT STEERING COLUMN,REMOVE TILT LEVER.CAREFULLY REMOVE THE UPPER AND LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVERS. REMOVE THE 3 TAMPER PROOF TORX IGNITION SWITCH MOUNTING SCREWS USING SNAP ON TOOL TTXR15A2 OR EQUIVALENT. GENTLY PULL THE SWITCH AWAY FROM THE COLUMN AND REMOVE THE 2 ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH. WITH THE KEY IN THE LOCK POSITION, DEPRESS THE KEY CYLINDER RETAINING PIN FLUSH WITH THE KEY CYLINDER SURFACE. ROTATE THE KEY CLOCKWISE TO THE OFF POSITION THE KEY CYLINDER SHOULD NOW BE UNSEATED. ROTATE THE KEY CYLINDER COUNTER CLOCKWISE BACK TO THE LOCK POSITION, AND REMOVE THE LOCK CYLINDER. ( TO INSTALL ) CONNECT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS TO THE IGNITION SWITCH. BE SURE THE CONNECTORS ARE SECURELY LOCKED IN PLACE. BE SURE THE SWITCH PARK LOCK DOWEL PIN ENTERS THE SLOT IN THE PARK LOCK SLIDER LINKAGE INSTALL THE RETAINING SCREW AND BRACKET. TORQUE THE SCREW TO 26 INCH LBS. INSTALL THE STEERING COLUMN COVERS AND THE TILT LEVER IF REMOVED. WITH THE KEY CYLINDER AND THE IGNITION IN THE LOCK POSITION INSTALL THE KEY CYLINDER INTO THE SWITCH UNTIL IT BOTTOMS. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE AND THE CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH FOR PROPER OPERATION OF HALO LIGHT SHIFT LOCK IF EQUIPPED AND COLUMN LOCK.ALSO CHECK FOR PROPER OPERATION OF THE IGNITION SWITCH ACCESSORY, LOCK OFF, RUN AND START FUNCTIONS.

the actuator inside the sterring column that the lock cylinder turns is boken, this is a very complex job and is not for the home tech without a factory service manual.

Replace ignition switch and kew switch

***As per Haynes Manual for your Vehicle*** Warning: if your vehicle is equipped with a suplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system, always disengage airbags before working in the vicinity of the sterring wheel to avoid accidental deployment of airbags.
1. disconnect the negative cable at the battery
2. Remove the steering wheel if it interferes with the access to the steering column covers on your vehicle. Remove the steering column covers.
3. Unplug the wires from the ignition switch, remove bolts and lift the switch off the steering column.
4. Installation os the reverse of removal.

Hope this Helps! I have a an illustration and it looks that the switch is on the left side of the steering column. If you need any information or help removing the Steering wheel or steering column covers let me know! Good Luck.

Removing steering colum

if you are refering to the ignition switch, put the key in the ignition and turn it to "on".  Do not start the car.  there should be a hole on the bottom of the column below the ignition switch.  Stick a long skinny object, such as an unbent paper clip into that hole.  There is a littlle "button" that you have to depress and pull the switch out.
