Question about 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Open Question

2004 VW Passat 1.8T GLS. Problem was recently diagnosed by VW dealer as a bad load reduction relay (wipers, signals, heat/air are out and BRAKE light stays on and beeps while car is moving). I have the part now but have no clue where it goes. Any help would be great, thanks. BW

yes, it's called the load reduction relay and it is in the 13 fold relay panel under driver side dash.

SOURCE: VW P421 code

This is a common problem with V6 Passats. VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago.
The code is telling you that your catalytic converter (driver's side, I think) is bad. It's more than likely not bad.

VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago. TSB 05-13. The cause of the error code is basically an over sensitive ECU (computer of car/engine) and the fix is to have your ECU flashed with the latest and greatest software. Depending on your mileage they might do it under warranty - you'll have to check.

It's still possible that it might be a bad catalytic converter - and the dealership might try to tell you that either way. Call VW (1-800-822-8987) and ask them about the TSB (I couldn't find it online).

Tell the dealership you want the ECU flashed - it's much much cheaper than a cat. No sense replacing it if it's not bad
There is a federal warranty on catalytic converters - 8 yrs or 80k miles...

Hope this helps!

Hi Josh, I don't know if the problem is common with VW but I have had similar problems before. The area of interest has always been the combo relay bank. A replacement unit has been needed ( we have managed by installing a used item purchased from a breakers yard, but we have problems getting replacement parts. New will be better. The problem seems to be presented when the same bank has been subjected to water contamination. Hope this has set you in the right direction. Regards John

I bought a 2004 VW Jetta GLS 1.8L Turbo earlier today. It has a clean carfax and recent (within a week) negative dealer diagnostics...it overheated. Well...it overheated within 2 minutes of hard...

Hold the dealer accountable, for starters! It could be the thermostat, a coolant leak, a severe engine problem, who knows? You shouldn't have to concern yourself with diagnosing and fixing a car you bought yesterday, unless you bought it as-is.

Just bought 2004 passat and winshield wipers dont work

If both wipers are not working, then first of all check your fuses, if fuses are good follow wiper motor wires or look in owner's manual to find the wiper relay. Test relay with ohmmeter to see if it is good or just replace it.
Double check all wiring.
Last possible cause would be the a bad wiper switch which you can also test with an ohmmeter
