Question about 2002 Chevrolet Impala

1 Answer

Something keeps draining my battery. I have checked the battery and the alternator. Sometimes when I get in the car I hear a clicking noise when it doesn't start. I pulled a fuse out and the noise stopped clicking. The fuse was called "DIC/RKE" I don't have a manual and don't know what this fuse is for or if it is even really the problem.

The clicking you hear is most likely your starter solenoid because there isn't enough juice to turn the starter. You could try pulling fuses and see if that stops the draining so you can isolate the problem. Most likely it is a short somewhere. I would check the ground off the battery as well as making sure your battery terminals are clean. How old is the battery? Have you checked it with a multimeter when its running to see how well it is a charging.
Thank you,
Lee

I unplugged my battery and I can hear something ticking fast, when I pull out fuses under the hood (main fuses) noises change..

could be the solenoid on the starter motor clicking, or sometimes there is just enough battery power to put lights on but higher drain items just click on & off trying to cut in, test the battery output voltage should be at least 12v to start, a fully charged battery will be 13.5v, under 12v is no good.

Bmw 318 compact 2002 wont start

How low is the alternator? 13.5 v with the motor running is about as low as I would want, but if you hear something running after you turn it off, it could be draining your battery. It is not uncommon for cooling fans to run after you turn the car off but shouldn't run for long. Can you look at yout cooling fans and see if that is what is running? How long do you hear the noise after you turn the car off?

New battery drains.

I can't imagine how changing the belt would have any effect on the electrical system if the alternator is working.
The way you check for a drain is to disconnect the battery ground cable and use a test light to make the connection between the battery and ground. If there is something drawing power from the battery the light will glow.
Then you pull each fuse from the fuse boxes until the light goes out. You also disconnect the starter and alternator if necessary.

Why is my battery draining

Unhook the battery and have someone sit in the car while you touch the contacts to the battery. + pos. If something is stuck on, draining your battery, you should hear is pop on when you make the connection leading you to your problem. Or maybe its just a defective battery

My 2001 Chevy Suburban won't start at times. I remove the cables from the battery and put them back on at it will start sometimes. Other times it requires a jump. It's random. I also noticed...

your battery is being drained ,, check the plug in for the towing light hook up , something is shorted across ,, clean and tighten all connections to the battery ,, once the vehicle is running,, check the posts with a meter, you should get a reading of 13.5-14.5 volts, if not your alternator isn't doing its job

Check the battery first, if it is ok you probably have a bad starter. If the battery is drained, you need to charge and test the battery and alternator.

My 1992 soverign does not need a battery.

It might be the bearing in the alternator pulley, or the brushes in the alternator themselves. I would try a new alternator.

Low voltage, the battery runs low when running the car

What is the voltage you are reading? Is it below 13.2 or so? Also have you checked the current with the engine off to see if something else is working that should not be on. I ran across this twice while working on a truck and car. A relay that was wore out keep trying to close and would drain the battery every couple of months. Sometimes you can hear them clicking or buzzing. Touching them sometimes they are warm or real hot. But that is not a sure sign it is bad. In my Trailblaze they get hot but are ok. Another thougth is the belt on your alt, correctly set to spin it at the right voltage. I have ran across this many times lately with serpatine belts.
