Question about 1987 Pontiac Firebird

1987 pontiac firebird trans am

I have a 1987 pontiac trans am. When the car warms up the fuel to the carb. quits. The engine is a 305 V8 with a 4 barrell quadrajet Carb. I inspected the gas lines, there was no problem. I replaced the coil, the fuel filter, the carb. the ignition module, the mechanical fuel pump, the spark plugs, the distributor, the distributor cap, the rotor button, and it still does the same thing. When it warms up it cuts off going down the road after "pulling back" like a misfiring cyl. and no fuel is delivered to the engine through the carb. It keeps pulling up two codes, one is the throttle position sensor, the other is lean exhaust. The new carb had a new throttle position sensor, and I checked the settings on it with a volt meter and everything with the trottle position sensor is running fine and at the correct voltage. I have never run into this before and I am at a loss, can someone help me?

ddc3 i had same problem i have 87 bird i had to either remove the sock screen off of the internal fuel pump in the gas tank and on another one i added a longer hose to reach bottom of fuel tank.so to solve the problem you will have to drop the fuel tank, believe me i went thru everything also.

SOURCE: 1989 pontiac firebird 305 v8 starts and idles

Your idle air control valve may be dirty or the wire harness may be damaged. First try cleaning the throttle body with throttle body cleaner and make sure you use all the can up and try to get the idle air control valve cleaned. A faulty or dirty idle air control valve will cause engine to stall when put in to gear from idle. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% soon.

My choke light stays on my 84 pontiac trans am. Why does this occurr and how can i fix this problem?

I bevieve that year is 305 or 350 with Throttle body injection so remove air cleaner cover start car allow to warm up then see if plate below main injector opens when engine is revved ..if it does then be sure it is partially open at idle .. check wiring underside of air cleaner / loose / heat damaged -----Or if Aftermarket air cleaner then unplugged wires from factory must be looped to create all ok signal .....The Throttle plate at base of unit or old style carb can wear creating unstable idle or choke light signal due to inconsistant air flow ..

I have an 87 trans am with a 305 TPI with an unknown problem

Check the knock sensor on the right side of the block, below the head, and above the oil pan.Check to see if it is plugged up good. Then check the wire all the way up to the wire harness,to see if it is grounding out on the engine somewhere.I hope this was helpful261213.jpg

1954 305 firebird Runs when warm Wont turnover when cold plz help

If the smell of fuel is there, check the plugs. Are they all firing.Look at the plugs and see if any look different to the others in color. If so check that cylinder.Check the lead to that plug.Is it ok.At idle, pull the lead on and off and see if the revs drop.If you get a zap,all is good:) Or use a heavy rag.Check all this first. You may have an 8 that is running on 6.Basics 1st.Hope this helps

My 1987 firebird keeps flooding out, why?

Several things can cause this but start by verify the choke pull off which is responsible for opening the choke plate after engine has started. It will recieve engine vaccum once started and open to allow air into the carb. This is a vacuum dash pot/pull-off externally mounted to the carb with a linkage arm to the choke plate.Without this opening, the engine will be starved for air and put you into a full rich condition. Another external device wchich can mysteriously cause rich conditions is the canister purge valve. It can introduce raw fuel and vapor on start up when failed. It is a black plastic valve near the carb with small and large vacuum tubes.
