Question about 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

My 1992 olds cutl sierra wont start but headlights & dash lights work. No click when turning key-just silence. Tried another key. Had starter replaced a couple years ago (supposedly new). Any ideas would be appreciated.

    You are a Guru-that just worked! Wouldn't start in park so tried neutral and it kicked over.
    What was that all about and what should we do to service this car if necessary?

First try giggling shifter or put in neutral. Let me know if security light is flashing.

    Thanks for the compliment. The problem is with your safety interlock switch. The switch is designed to prevent starting the car in gear but is going bad. The switch is mounted on the top of your transmission where the shifter cable attaches and looks like a thin black box. Cost for a new switch is under $20. I will paste instructions below from on steps to replace the part.

    Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.
    Place the vehicle in the neutral position.
    Remove the shifter linkage.
    Disconnect the electrical harness to the switch.

    Unfasten the switch, then lower from the vehicle.

    To install:

    Place the shift shaft in Neutral.
    Align the flats of the shift shaft to flats in the switch.
    Install the switch assembly.

    If the bolt holes do not align with the mounting boss on the transaxle, verify the sift shaft DO NOT ROTATE THE SWITCH. The switch is pinned in the neutral position. If the switch has been rotated and the pin broken or when using an old switch, adjust it.

    Tighten the switch screw to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    Remove the gauge pin.
    Attach the electrical connection, then connect the shifter linkage.


    Place the transaxle control shifter in the neutral notch on the detent plate.
    Loosen the switch attaching screws.
    Rotate the switch on the shifter assembly to align the service adjustment hole with the carrier tang hole.
    Insert a 3 / 32 in. (2.34mm) maximum diameter gauge pin to a depth of 5 / 8 in. (15mm).
    Tighten the attaching screws.
    Remove the gauge pin.

This may be related to the antitheft security system. The system is known for turning off the starter and/or injectors when it fails. When it's the security locked out starter, you won't even hear a click when you turn the key. Is there a light on the dash that says SECURITY or a picture of a car with a lock through it? This is a common problem worth looking into.

Ignition switch on dodge dynasty?

I had a similar problem years ago. As long as your dash lights come on, it's likely you can use an external pushbutton switch to run the starter. There are likely just 4 wires on the ignition switch. Power from the battery, and switched to:
main car stuff (dash lights, ignition, signals, etc)
splice in wires from battery and starter to new switch, and you're good to go. This worked for years on my old car.

Have you tried jumping the car yet? What have you tried so far? I would get someone to jump it real quick. Theres other ways to see if battery is dead but a quick way is to get a jump then tell us what happens. Good luck-

Turns over but won't start

I would start checking fuses for power. It could be a battery cable issue or something in the fuse box. The dash lights would not be powered thru the key switch, but the other stuff would be. Provided the key switch is getting power for accessories.

Used parts such as starters and altinators don't last. It might **** but it sounds like you need to buy a new starter,altinator, and battery. Or just start with buying one at a time.

did you see what volts the battery is? and what volts it goes to while trying to start it? should have over 12, and then over 10 while trying to start. Sounds like a battery, or... a poor connection.
