Question about 1999 Buick Century

The serpentine belt pulley on the crankshaft dampener has separated from the dampener and is moving forward, throwing the belt off. It is about 1/2 inch forward, and a black rubberish gasket is working it's way loose. Do I have to remove the dampener? What should I do?

Yes, you need a new dampener. You will need special tool--a puller. the procedure from autozone.com is as follows:

  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right front tire assembly.
  4. Locate and remove the right splash shield.
  5. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and washer. (my note: you may need to remove the starter and lock the flexplate starter gear with a screwdriver to hold the engine while loosening the damper bolt)
  6. Remove the crankshaft balancer using a three-leg puller such as J 24420-B, or equivalent.

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well. Apply a thin coat of sealer GM #12345739, or equivalent, to the keyway of the balancer. This is to help prevent oil from wicking along the keyway and causing a leak.
  2. Install the crankshaft balancer using tool J 29113 Crankshaft Balancer Installer or equivalent, to draw the balancer onto the crankshaft. Do not hammer on the balancer. (my note: I have never needed this tool. I slip the balancer on and draw it in with the bolt)
  3. Install the crankshaft bolt and washer and torque to 76-80 ft. lbs. (103-108 Nm).
  4. Install the remainder of the components in the reverse order of removal.

95 LeSabre 3.8 serpentine belt removed you can turn crankshaft pulley forward and back about an inch and a half makes loud noise at times car still runs and drives possible broken crankshaft?


you should be able to turn it by hand or with a socket and ratchet broken crank means broken car if you broke crank which is rare you would not have a running engine sounds more like stretched timing chain if it feels sloppy

Replacing the Crankshaft and Camshaft sensors on a 1991 and later Buick Park...


If your car is misfiring in a rhythmical pattern when you first start it up for the day or dieing when engine is hot, it could mean your Camshaft or Crankshaft sensors need replacement.

Important, disconnect negative cable from the battery before doing any work on electrical system. Wear safety goggles.

Tools recommended:
Break Bar, Torque Wrench, ratchet driver and a full metrics ratchet socket set, one Q tip, large straight blade screwdriver, ratchet extension and adapters if needed.

First we'll start with the easiest and cheapest of the two sensors.

Replacing the camshaft sensor:

The camshaft sensor is located on the right side of the engine, behind the water pump pulley.

1. Loosen the screws to the water pump pulley with a breaker bar before removing the serpentine belt. Always turn counter clockwise to loosen.

2.Remove the serpentine belt via the belt tension-er.

3.Use a regular ratchet driver to finish removing the belt pulley from the water pump.

4.Remove the bolt holding the camshaft sensor in place and disconnect electrical connector. Secure the connector with a clothes pin so you don't lose it down in the engine compartment. Clean around the sensor to avoid getting dirt in the engine.

5. Pull the camshaft sensor straight out with a slight twisting motion.

6. Lightly lubricate the O-Ring on the new sensor with fresh motor oil, and install in the engine.

7. installation is the reverse of removal.

Sensor:

1. Jack up the front passenger side of the car and safely support it on jack-stands.

2.Remove the tire, remove the inner tire well splash guard cover.

3.Before removing serpentine belt, loosen the center bolt on the harmonic balancer/vibration dampener. (crankshaft pulley)

4. Remove serpentine belt via the belt tensioner.

5.Finish loosening and remove the bolt from the harmonic balancer.
Have an assistant help you, using care not to let the weight of the harmonic balancer rest on the bolt as it can be damaged. Gently pry it of with a straight blade screwdriver. Leave the woodruff key in the crankshaft. Use care to not damage the crankshaft during removal as oil leakage could result. Mark the relationship between the crankshaft and the pulley, so you will be able to line the pulley up just right during re -installation.

6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the crankshaft sensor, secure the connector with clothes pin and loosen the bolts holding the sensor pedestal in place.

7.Separate the old sensor from the pedestal, and install the new sensor, just the same way the old sensor came out. Using the suggested crankshaft sensor alignment tool on the back of the harmonic balancer, making sure the fins on the harmonic balancer pass through the sensor's slot and don't hit it. If any fins on the back side of the harmonic balancer are bent, damaged, or missing, replace the harmonic balancer assembly.

Installation is the reverse of removal. It is imperative the crankshaft sensor be aligned properly before engine start up to avoid damage. Use care not to over tighten bolts during installation. Always tighten to manufacturer's recommended torque.

Hi, on the 1993 Buick Lesabre the crankshaft sensor is located under the dampener pulley. Remove the serpentine belt. Remove right front wheel. Remove plastic access cover thats behind that wheel. With an impact wrench remove dampener pulley bolt. With an Dampener pulley puller remove pulley. There is a plastic cover that snaps in place over the sensor, remove it, and you will have access to the sensor.

Using a air impact gun would be quick and simple. Check the pulley, sometimes the rubber seperates from the actual pulley. Crankshft pulleys usually don`t walk off. I think it seperated. Have your service shop take alook..

If it's the main pulley that connects to the crankshaft and drives the serpentine belt, it's called the dampener pulley.
If the dampener pulley has worked loose or separated, you'll need to replace any damaged components, possibly including the pulley, mounting bolt and even the crankshaft and front engine housing could have been damaged if the pulley continued to turn while it was loose.
It could be as simple as tightening the bolt or as severe as a major engine rebuild. A mechanic can't know until he takes a look at it.

No, there are no bearings in the crankshaft pulley. No, it's not a common problem. The pulley is simply loose!

First determine if the pulley bolts to the harmonic dampener or if it's all one piece.

If one piece, then there is probably 1 bolt in the center of the dished portion that has loosened. If not repaired, the harmonic dampener can fall off, possibly damaging the end of the crankshaft.

If it's not 1 piece, then there will probably 3 or maybe 4 bolts in a circular pattern around the edge of the pulley bolting it to the harmonic dampener. Check to make sure all bolts are there and tighten down. A flexible mechanics mirror comes in handy for seeing exactly whats in the dish of the pulley.

If I were you, I wouldn't start the engine until this is properly resolved.

The crankshaft turns but won't turn the serpentine belt after radiator fluid got on it!


Remove and Replace the Serpentine Belt.

GENERAL/Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with a Tensioner:
A. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
B. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
C. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
D. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with Tensioners:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them

the pulley is also a dampener often times they seperate from each other. replace pulley/dampener.
