Question about 1998 Dodge Dakota

I have replaced every part related to the ignition, checked fuel pressure for 4 days with a gauge plumbed into the system,good, and anything related to the fuel curve. Today, changed the distributor cap which was burnt on each contact on the inside and also the ignition pickup. Of course it started right up and ran well,so let it sit for 2 hours and did other things and came back to restart it and it wouldn't start. Let it set for another hour and it started right up. It either smells rich or flooded or you can't smell a thing. I give up, Jeff

Your assessment that the fuel is flooding can be right as this can be the only reason that the car is not starting up unless the system drains off.
It will be easy to confirm if you can stop the engine and see if the fuel still drains into the cylinder. When the engine fails to start you must remove the plugs and check for smell off fuel flooding, now do a flush up cranking with the plug taken off, If the fuel flow is more then the pump must be calibrated with a service center for the correct pressure specially with the idle settings.
The throttle position sensor, the ECU is also a possible suspect. make sure the sensor connectors are tight as the ECU might be getting a throttle wide open condition from the throttle position sensor.
Make sure you recheck all the connections , remove refit all sensors after checking.
Once this is done the fault must be cured.

Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good.
If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse.
If you having a problem with more than one system, I want to check for rpm signal, that usually comes from the crank sensor. Not sure why you replaced cam sensor? I always want to check sensor wiring circuits before replacing anything. Don't replace anything unless your testing points in that direction.

Have you checked for spark on a plug wire with the engine cranking? If no spark, the problem is in the ignition system- the ignition coils, the ignition control module, the plug wires and plugs, the crankshaft position sensor, and the PCM-all are parts of the ignition system. Don't replace without testing- it will save you money.

Also check the fuel pressure at the engine, or at least verify the fuel pump is getting gas up to the engine. If you turn the key to on, not start, the fuel pump should turn on for 2 seconds to put pressure in the line and in the fuel rail where the fuel injectors are. Do you see a valve on the fuel rail, it may have a cap screwed on it. This is the test port to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and check fuel pressure. Autozone and others loan or rent fuel pressure gauges.

Hi Joanne, I would have the fuel pump pressure checked before anything else. Have it replaced if the pressure in line falls below 3. 4 bar. It should be checked while in the vehicle by attaching the gauge to the fuel rail. You would be advised to also replace the fuel filter. It is possible but not common for the igniter which is situated inside the distributor to fail. The 'Y' series engines are very reliable and if serviced regularly should give years of good use. 97 honda accord SE not getting power to fuel pump I drove my car over to my mothers house shut it off and went out to leave and my car would not start checked all the fuses and the relays then realized...


Three things you may want to check out next in your problem diagnosis:

1. You may actually be getting power to the fuel pump through the functioning fuel pump relay and the good fuse, but the fuel pump itself may have failed - you can check by disconnecting the fuel pump electrical connector, and checking for battery voltage when the ignition key is turned to "Start".

2. The ignition switch itself may have failed, since it has been recalled on this vehicle. The recalled defect may have caused a failure of the switch to deliver power to the fuel pump at startup. Here's a list of all the recalls for the 1997 Accord:

3. Testing the PGM-FI main relay is fairly involved (and not detailed in the information below). You may want to re-post your query asking for the testing & diagnosis procedure for this component alone.

Below find the 1997 Honda Accord manual entry for diagnosis & testing of the fuel pump electrical circuit.

TESTING

Fuel Pump Circuit

If you suspect a problem with the fuel pump, listen for the pump to operate by removing the fuel fill cap and checking to see if the pump can be heard running during the first two seconds after the ignition key is turned to the ON position. You should hear the fuel pump motor run.

If the fuel pump can be heard running, the fuel pump's electrical circuit is likely to be OK and the fuel pump operating pressure should be checked as outlined later in this section.

Once the engine has started, the fuel pump operation is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) via the PGM-FI Main Relay. The fuel pump receives its electrical power from the PGM-FI Main Relay, which is triggered for two seconds when the ignition switch is initially turned to the on position.

After the initial two-second startup signal is received, the PGM-FI Main Relay is controlled by the PCM. Because the fuel pump receives its power from the PGM-FI Main Relay, a problem with the ignition switch, PCM, or electrical wiring may not allow battery voltage to reach the pump.

To check the fuel pump wiring proceed as follows:

1. Make sure the ignition switch is in the OFF position.
2. Locate and detach the fuel pump electrical connector at the fuel tank.
3. You may have to remove the floor access panel. For specific details, see the fuel pump removal procedure in this section.
4. Fuel pump access is limited on some 1996-97 models of the Accord and may require you to work under the vehicle. Perform the following steps if that is the situation:

a. Raise the vehicle and safely support it on suitable jackstands.
b. Remove the protective cover from the fuel tank fuel hoses.

5. Detach the fuel pump electrical connector.
6. Connect a suitable Voltmeter between the fuel pump positive terminal of the electrical connector and a known good chassis ground.
7. Hold the electrical connector of the PGM-FI Main Relay so the wire side of the female terminals is visible and install a jumper wire between terminal Nos. 4 and 5.
8. When the ignition switch is turned ON , battery voltage should be present at the fuel pump electrical connector.
9. If the battery voltage is present, check the fuel pump's ground.
10. If the ground is "OK", check the fuel pump.
11. If battery voltage is not present, trace the wiring harness and check the cause for an open or shorted circuit.
12. If all wiring checks out, test the fuel pressure, as outlined later in this section.

Fuel Pump Pressure

The fuel pressure should be checked at the fuel rail or at the fuel feed line for the fuel rail. The fuel pressure is checked with the engine started, thus the fuel pressure gauge must not interrupt the flow of fuel to the fuel rail and the fuel injectors.

To attach a fuel pressure gauge to the pressurized fuel loop requires the use of an adapter that is capable of safely withstanding the fuel system fuel pressure.

WARNING
Checking the fuel system fuel pressure requires the use of an in-line fuel pressure gauge with the engine running. Do not perform this check if suitable test equipment and fuel fittings are not available. The fuel system operates under pressure, if any fuel leakage is noticed while performing this check STOP immediately and do not continue until the source of the leak is resolved. Do not perform this test near sources of heat, spark, or flames. This test must be performed in a well-ventilated area.


CAUTION
The fuel injection system remains under pressure, even after the engine has been turned OFF . The fuel system pressure MUST BE relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire and/or personal injury.

To check the fuel system pressure proceed as follows:

1. Remove the fuel filler cap and relieve the residual fuel pressure. For specific details, refer to the relieving fuel pressure coverage in this section.
2. Attach a suitable fuel pressure gauge to the fuel injection fuel loop as follows:

Models such as the 1998-00 Accord have a fuel pulsation dampener which must be removed in place of the banjo bolt for testing.

1996-97 Accord with 4-cylinder engines and 1996-00 Prelude: Remove the service/banjo bolt from the end of the fuel rail. Install the fuel pressure gauge using a suitable fitting to temporarily substitute for the banjo bolt or in place of the service bolt that will allow fuel to be supplied to the gauge and the fuel rail.

1996-97 Accord with V6 engines: Remove the banjo bolt from the fuel filter outlet and install the pressure gauge using a suitable fitting to temporarily substitute for the banjo bolt and supply fuel to the gauge and the fuel rail.

1998-00 Accord: Remove the fuel pulsation damper from the end of the fuel rail and install a suitable fuel pressure gauge in its place.

3. Remove and plug the vacuum line for the fuel pressure regulator located near the end of the fuel rail.
4. Start the engine and note the fuel pressure. With the pressure regulator vacuum hose disconnected and plugged, the fuel pressure should register as follows:

2.2L engines: 38-46 psi (260-310 kPa)

2.3L engines: 47-54 psi (320-370 kPa)

2.7L engines: 40-47 psi (270-320 kPa)

3.0L engines: 41-48 psi (280-330 kPa)

If the engine won't start, turn on the ignition switch ON, wait two seconds, then turn off the ignition switch OFF. Turn the ignition switch back ON again and read the fuel pressure.

5. If the fuel pressure is higher than specification check for a pinched or restricted fuel return hose or line.

6. If the fuel pressure is lower than the specification check for a damaged fuel pressure regulator, clogged fuel filter, fuel feed line or a leak in the fuel feed line. If the fuel pressure regulator, fuel feed lines, and fuel pump are OK, replace the fuel pump and fuel filter.

The fuel pressure regulator testing procedures are located later in this section.

Once the test is complete, perform the following:

7. Carefully remove the fuel pressure gauge and test fittings.
8. Install the removed fasteners using new sealing washers.
9. Install the fuel filler cap.
10. Start the engine and check for any fuel leaks, and repair as necessary.

How to Replace a Fuel Filter in a Chevy

A clean fuel filter in your Chevy means clean fuel injectors and a clean fuel pressure regulator. Replace the fuel filter in your every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to keep the fuel system in optimal condition. Follow the instructions provided here to change the fuel filter on a Chevy that does not have a flex fuel system.
Difficulty: Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need:

  • Shop towel
  • Pressure gauge
  • Container for fuel
  • Car ramps
  • Wrench
  • New fuel filter
  1. 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable. Relieve the vapor pressure in the fuel tank by slowly loosening the fuel filter cap. Wrap a shop towel around the fuel pressure valve as you connect a pressure gauge to the fuel pressure valve.
  2. 2 Put the bleed hose of the gauge into a container that will hold the fuel. Open the gauge valve to bleed the system pressure. Drain any fuel that remains in the gauge into the container, as well.
  3. 3 Raise the vehicle and clean the fuel filter connections and the surrounding areas. Disconnect the fuel pipes and the threaded fittings from the fuel filter. Cover the fuel pipes once they're disconnected, to prevent contaminating your fuel system.
  4. 4 Slide the fuel filter out of the bracket on the frame rail. Check the fuel pipe O-rings and replace the if you find any cuts, nicks, or distortion. Slide the new filter into the bracket. Remove the caps you put on the fuel pipes and connect the threaded fittings back to the filter. Tighten the fittings to 18 foot-pounds.
  5. 5 Lower the vehicle and tighten the fuel filter cap. Replace the fuel. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition on for 2 seconds. Turn the ignition off for 10 seconds, the Chevy and check for leaks.
Tips & Warnings
  • Always let the pressure out of the fuel system before you disconnect the fuel lines. Do this carefully so as not to spray fuel on your skin, face or eyes.
  • Make sure you wipe up any fuel that may have spilled while you were replacing the filter.

I put a new fuel pump in my 97 concorde, it ran just fine all the way home, but in the morning i wouldnt start. i put another pump in and the same thing happend. could this be a short somewhere?


Well, the fuel pump relay may not be getting electricity to the fuel pump.

Also, use the following procedure to test the fuel pump before changing it again:

  1. Release the fuel system pressure as described in earlier in this section.
  2. Remove the protective cover from the service valve on the fuel rail.
  3. Connect fuel pressure gauge C-4799B or equivalent to the fuel rail service valve.
  4. Place the ignition key in the ON position. Using the DRB III tester or equivalent, access the ASD fuel system test. (The ASD fuel system test will activate the fuel pump and pressurize the system.)
  5. If the gauge reading equals the specifications, then further testing is not required. Without vacuum applied to the regulator, the 3.3L engine fuel system operates at 55 psi (379 kPa). With the engine idling and the manifold vacuum applied to the regulator, the system operates at approximately 46 psi (317 kPa). Without vacuum applied to the regulator, the 3.5L engine fuel system operates at 48 psi (331 kPa). With the engine idling and the manifold vacuum applied to the regulator, the system operates at approximately 39 psi (269 kPa). The fuel system pressure varies with the different amounts of manifold vacuum applied to the regulator. If the pressure is not correct, record the pressure and remove the gauge.
  6. Ensure that the fuel does not leak from the fuel rail service valve. Install the protective cover onto the fuel rail service valve.
  7. If the fuel pressure reading was below the specifications, test the system according to the following procedure:
    1. Perform the fuel pressure release procedure.
    2. Install a fuel gauge C4799 and fuel adapter 6631 or equivalent in the fuel supply line between the tank and the fuel filter.
    3. Using the DRB III scan tool or equivalent, with the ignition key in the ON position, repeat the ASD fuel system test.
  8. If the pressure is at least 5 psi (1 kPa) or higher than the reading recorded, replace the fuel filter.
  9. If no change is observed, gently squeeze the return hose. If the pressure increases, replace the pressure regulator. If the gauge reading does not change when the return hose is squeezed, the problem is either a plugged inlet strainer or defective fuel pump.
  10. If the fuel pressure reading was above the specifications test the system according to the following procedure:
    1. Perform the pressure release procedure.
    2. Install fuel pressure gauge C4799 and adapter 6631 or equivalent in the fuel supply line between the fuel tank and the fuel filter.
    3. Remove the fuel return line hose from the pump at the tank. Connect pressure test adapter 6668 or equivalent to the return line. Place the other end of adapter 6668 into an approved gasoline container. A minimum of 2 gallon tank should be sufficient. All return fuel will flow into the container.
    4. Using the DRB III scan tool or its equivalent, with the ignition key in the ON position, repeat the ASD fuel system test.
  11. If the pressure is now correct, replace the fuel pump.
  12. If the pressure is still above specifications, remove the fuel return hose from the chassis fuel tubes (at the engine) and attach fuel pressure test adapter 6668 or equivalent to the return tube. Place the other end of the hose in the clean container, repeat the test. If the pressure is now correct, check for a restricted fuel return line. If there is no change observed, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

possibly 4 things 1 bad ignition coil heating up then breaking down,2 clogged fuel filter,3 weak fuel pump,4 bad throttle position sensor or map sensor to check sensors simply put on hand held scanner and look for codes. replace fuel filter replace coil pack along with tune up plugs wires put fuel pressure gauge to see if fuel pump is working properly

Car cranks but will not start after it sets for awhile. Recycle the key 3-4 times and fuel pressure is good it starts and runs fine?

Position the ignition switch and the A/C system in the off position. Install a fuel pressure gauge to the vehicles fuel rail service valve. Confirm that no leaks are present, and place the ignition switch in the run position and utilize a scan tool to energize the fuel pump. This will bring the system to a stabilized fuel pressure that can be visually verified on the gauge.

When the misfire monitor detects a misfire, it will trigger the check engine light with the specific cylinder number as the last digit in the P030X code. For instance cylinder 1 misfire is P0301, cylinder 2 is P0302 etc.

The misfire detection monitor, a software strategy built into the computer, is designed to detect an engine misfire. The computer can also normally identify the specific cylinder in which the misfire has occurred. A misfire is nothing more than a lack of combustion, which can be caused by poor fuel quality or metering, low compression, lack of spark or unmetered air entering the engine. There are other possible, less obvious causes as well, such as uncommanded Exhaust Gas Recirculatin (EGR), flow.

Running out of gas, or poor fuel quality
