The PATS (Passive Anti Theft System) system requires the key (with its unique transponder serial) to be present in the key hub for it to enable the engine management. Since it doesn't detect it there can be just 2 things that can go bad: the key or the entire PATS system.
The key problem (it has failed) can be solved only if you still have the master key - you will have to buy a new blank key and program it to the car using the master key; otherwise the entire system will have to be replaced and reinstalled(in software) to your car by a dealer - only them can do that.
The PATS problem can be solved only by replacing it at a dealer

I have a Renault 420 DCI Premium truck year 2002.I see THEFT DEFECT displayed on the panel. The engine cranks but does not start. What to do?

that would be the immobilizer at work and is stopping the engine from starting
contact the service dealer and ask how to reset the immobilizer
the immobilizer probably activated when you changed the batteries.

Key on display while starting and does not start

The "Key" on the dash means that the immobilizer was activated for whatever reason. Usually you can fix this by inserting the key to position 1 then pressing unlock on the key head. You should get the chirp. Turn key off and try starting. Also, make sure that there aren't any other RFID devices around. I've heard that can cause issues.

Need to override factory keyless entry wont start

First of all you need to programm all ignition keys using suitable diagnostic equipment (VAS, VAG-Com) connected to the data link connector of the car.

You have an electronic immobilizer key recognition problem. Now your key chip is not recognized by the transponder antenna fitted on the ignition switch barrel.

  • Everytime when you had a new key you must programm all available ignition car keys before trying to start the engine with this new key !!!

This warning lamp indicates that the engine is locked by the immobilizer system, and the engine start sequence must be repeat again.

From year 1995 in Audi-VW (VAG) cars is used engine immobilizer. The VAG group immobilizer system consists of an immobilizer ECU which controls the recognition of keys and the Engine Management ECU system. Immobilizer is activated when the ignition key is removed and, together with the engine control unit, largely prevents unauthorized starting of the engine. The system uses a transmitter and receiver unit in the ignition key (transponder). Whenever an attempt is made to start the engine, it transmits a new code to the car's electronics. The immobilizing is only cancelled and car motor electronic receives permission to start engine if the key sends a right authorization code.

    Dear Sir
It could be cause of 4 things 1 Key faulty 2 Engine Control Module 3 Ignition Immobilizer 4 Wiring.
But when you replacing immobilizer it should be program or paired with Engine Control Module and Key, Then only it will work, for programing you will require scanner or diagnostic tool for particular model, better to visit authorize workshop. if any doubts please feel free and ask me thanks.
