Question about 2005 Hyundai Sonata

1 Answer

Car runs but for awhile then dies. After it sits for 15 min. it will start again. Check engine light was on saying it was an O2 sensor. Replaced both O2 sensors and fuel pump and check engine light went off but didn't fix the problem.

This sounds like an ignition module problem, you replaced the fuelpump thats good it takes that out of the picture because that would cause this also, now lets take a look at the control module these will heat up and go babd and loose spark and fuel sometimes but always spark, alot of auto parts stores can test these modules but if not i would replace it and go from there , good luck hope this helps.

The fuel pressure sounds too low. Is it multi-port injection? Check the fuel pressure against your specs for the car and engine. MPFI systems usually require 40-50 psi.

Get it scanned again. If you bought cheaper ones at the parts store instead of oem ones from the dealer you are probably going to be doing them again. The upstream and down stream 02 sensors communicate with each other so it could be the upstream sensors even though it says downstream. I ran into this problem myself.

it sure sounds like you have an EGR problem. This valve controls the flow of unburned exhaust gases and re-routes them too the intake to be re-burned. This valve is usually open at highway or cruise speeds. Not usually open at idle. If this EGR valve is open at idle, you get a rough running for sure just like a mis fire and will smooth out as your speed increases. I would get that checked out and if faulty, replace. Please keep in mind that this part is quite expensive new, but it is electrically controlled. good luck!

check if you have a spark when engine dies. if not, check the rpm sensor or ignition coil. both have the simptoms like you describe.

Vacuum hose busted

Sounds like the computer system readjusted it self to the specific air measurements that the busted hose was allowing in to the engine.(This is only relevant if you have a 1987-up) turn off the car, remove the battery cables, and let sit for 45 min, this is ample time to reset the computer memory. Reattatch cables and start. It may run rough for a few miles but if after say 50 miles of driving, if it still wont idle, than you may need to replace sensors. (MAF, intake sensors, O2 sensors, etc..)
