Could have a intake or head leak,have it checked for (gases)in antifreeze also have it pressure checked.

You have air in the top of the engine.
The antifreeze spewing out of the overflow happens due to your perfectly functional radiator cap
passing the overheated coolant/air mixture out of the system into the reservior (in an attempt
to relieve overpressurization of the cooling system)
The sudden nature of your overheating comes from the boiling of the inadequate amount of
coolant/antifreeze in your engine, since it cant properly cool the engine, except for the first
10-25 minutes of operation - after that, it boils (overheats quickly), then pressure rises immediately
within the cooling system.
The Fix is free: locate and open the (air) bleeder port at the top of the engine, and add the usual
50% coolant/50% water mixture to the radiator until the radiator is full to the level indicated in
your owner's manual (or the "Full" line). Then close the bleeder port and replace the rad (radiator)
cap.
The air bleeder port is normally located near the thermostat, and should be opened each time
that coolant is added to the radiator. The air bleeder port need not be opened when adding
50/50 coolant to the reservior, since the rad cap is going to be closed while adding coolant
to this part of the cooling system.
Warning: driving beyond the point where your engine temperature gauge indicates overheating will
destroy the car's engine - it'll seize up due to overheating, and the only fix for a seized/burned-up
engine is replacement (of the engine). Seizing an engine is really easy with an air bubble in the
top of the engine - you could easily burn up/warp the head, necessitating replacement of the head
and head gasket.

My heater blows cold air when car is stopped. i have installed a new water pump and the radiator is full of water.


you still have air trapped in the cooling system. Get front of car as high up as you can on a hill. Cold engine - loosen radiator cap, fill with 50/50 antifreeze mix. Start engine and run until upper radiator hose is hot (thermostat open). Engine should burp air and maybe spill some coolant, that's ok. Once burped, tighten cap, shut off engine and let it cool down while keeping the reservoir full. It will **** coolant out of reservoir as it cools. Keep it full.

If still cold air, take to a shop that has evac/fill equipment; they will **** air out and repalce with coolant. About $80.

It's not a good idea to drive a car that is overheating. Permanent engine damage can occur. You need to find out what is causing the overheating problem. First, check the coolant level. Do this with a cold engine to avoid burns when you remove the radiator cap. If the fluid level is low, replenish with a 50/50 mixture of anitfreeze and water. Be sure to use an antifreeze that is compatible with aluminum. With the radiator full, run the engine until the top radiator hose is warm to the touch. Carefully remove the radiator cap and observe the coolant for several minutes to determine if it is flowing through the engine. If the coolant does not seem to be flowing, then you need to replace the thermostat. If you replace the thermostat, it would be a good time to flush the cooling system with a good commercial product such as Prestone Super Flush. Follow the directions closely. Refill the cooling system with the correct antifreeze. Avoid Dexcool antifreeze. It has too many problems associated with it. If the warning light is still on, you may need to use a scanner to clear it. Drive the car normally and watch for any signs of overheating. Keep a close eye on the coolant level. If it was low earlier, that could mean you have a leak. Let me know the outcome.

My car will over heat just sitting still. it will also over heat while i am driving. replaced the thermostat still over heats


ur head gasket might be damaged.you would have to do copression test, and another thing is if its smoking its mixing ur oil and antifreeze if you keep drining it while overheating it will seize ur motor

CHECK COOLANT.IF COOLANT TOO LOW IT WILL CAUSE OVERHEATING.IF COOLANT LEVEL IS GOOD.YOUR THERMOSTAT IS STICKING CLOSED.IF ALL IS WELL.YOUR RADIATOR IS CLOGGED UP NEED FLUSHING.ENGINE BLOCK WATER PASSAGES IS STOPPED UP.LEAKING HEAD GASKET WILL CAUSE OVERHEATING. USE A SCANNER TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE COOLANT FAN IS WORKING.AND COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS WORKING.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS WHAT CAUSES THE COOLANT FAN TO TURN ON AT 190 TO 200 DEGREES.IF COOLANT FAN NOT WORKING.HOT WIRE IT USING JUMPER WIRE TO BATTERY. IF FAN RUNS YOU HAVE A BAD FUSE OR RELAY.IF NOT FAN MOTOR IS FAULTY.REPLACE IT.ALSO CHECK WATER PUMP IF YOU SEE SIGNS OF ANTIFREEZE LEAKING AROUND WATER PUMP.REPLACE IT.ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 % WATER AND 50 % ANTIFREEZE. Pontiac gp 02 overheating


thermostat should be replace on over heated engine, the spring loses tension, probaly not problem, most like head gasket if over heated severly, if you have a air pocket & wornt purge thats one sign,press test on cold engine let sit at start up run slightly rough may see & smell coolant at tail pipe, could also pull plugs may have one wet all crude checks, there is also chemical you put in coolant & use a a stripe for combustion I think napa or snap on sells, alsoyou could do tear down & inspection wish you luck not sure what engine or car you have grand am or grand prix my guess a GP with poss 3.4 more likely then 3800 engine

Overheating


Having the radiator rodded is a good move. Retest. If it has an electric radiator fan check temp sensors. If the fan has a clutch it may need to be replaced if its slipping with the engine hot. Check bellts. Its likely a fan air flow issue if the engine overheats when the care is not moving or is moving slowly. If the engine overheats only with AC on that narrows it down. Write back if that's the case. Lots of things can cause this. Antifreeze and a good radiator cap discourages boiling. Pressure in the radiator raises the boiling point but it can't build up pressure if the cap is bad. Antifreeze also raises the boiling point. If actual boiling happens in the engine then steam builds up in critical places and drives the collant out of the block making the engine even hotter than it already is. Replace the cap. Check the antifreeze.
