Re: Geo Prizm brake lights
Possibly loose grounding on the taillight assembly. Most taillights operate with dual filament bulb (3 terminal). The metal body of the bulb bottom is usually connected to the body ground. The correct procedure would be to trace the wiring harness from the taillight and determine which is the ground and verify that the contacts are clean and free of corrosion. An alternative is to add a grounding wire from said metal body of the taillight bulb and attached to any bare metal/chassis/body in the rear.

The brake warning light tells the driver the parking brake is on, or the fluid in the hydraulic system is low. If the parking brake is not on, and the fluid level is ok, it could be the parking brake switch or the fluid level sensor.
Brake Light Switch
The brake light switch is located at the top of the pedal arm. It is the switch which turns the brake lights on when the brakes are applied. The plunger type switch is held in the off position by the normal position of the brake pedal; when the pedal moves during brake application, the switch plunger moves forward and the brake lights are brought on.
The switch is almost always the first place to look for the cause of the brake lights flickering over bumps or staying on without use of the brakes. If the brake lights fail to work with the brakes applied, check the fuse first and then check the switch.
Its crazy but my tail lights went out also and I could not afford to have them fixed but I can tell you how I fixed mine. If you pull the cd player out you have to connect the orange wire also called the dimmer switch the wire is solid orange connect it to the red fire wire that you use to power the cd player and everytime you turn on the ignition switch the tail lights will come on but when the switch is off they will go off.
Took it to the shop. The side marker lights were missing on my son's car. The wiring loops from the side marker lights to the tail lights. As the wires were touching in the front, they shorted out the tail lights. Capped the wires, problem solved!
PS: ordered side marker lights, too.
