Question about 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

EEC? Yesterday I gave my 94 Grand Marquis a tune up and had a mechanic flush the trans and change the trans filter and gasket. The car ran great last night and most of today. I was driving and it stalled like it was out of gas. I had it towed home and added more gas. If I spray starter fluid in the air breather(?) it will try to turn over but just die. Does this mean it is fuel related? Is there a way to check to see if the pump, or relay is defective? Also, when checking the fuse to the fuel pump I noticed the EEC fuse is blown. I changed it and it blew again as soon as I started the car. Any advice will be appreciated.

Well that sounds like you may have a short to power or a short to ground means you may have 2 wires rubbing against each other or you may have an internal problem with the cars computer.start by back tracking the wires leaving the box where the fuse is and if you have acces to a meter try to measure the draw of the short with meter on the highest scale of the amps side don't test for for more then 5sec at a time or may damage meter.back to checking fuel pump with out dropping out of tank is to self power the unit and run a hose from fuel line disconnected from motor or by the tank-if you can raise the car and let it run for 10min see what happens if not check relay
to see if you have ground at the relay and 12volt to relay and turn on volt from ignition or computer. listen for the click on and cliick off if ground is god and power then swop the relay another relay and run again for 10min P.S please check or replace fuel filter and I've had problems with mass air flow sensor on those cars computer doesnt know how much air is being monitored so computer doesnt know how much fuel to add to car

I think you have a four speed electronic overdrive like my 94 merc.

I never had problems but I changed filter and fluid and added Lucas Oil Products - Transmission Additive 24 oz do not over fill.

Frozen ice around shift mechanism. Oil in trans is too thick. Try adding a heat lamp or blanket around the transmission area.

My car keeps stalling. I had my oil changed, oil filter and fuel filter, put carborater cleaner in the gas tank ...nothing has helped. Any ideas? I haven't had a tune up in 3+ years, could it just

It could need plugs, or something else. Plugs are designed to last 100,000 miles but no guarantee.
Often times stalling is caused by a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve. I would have a mechanic check the valve and also see if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer.

The upper intake gaskets leak on these engines, here is how to check this, get a can of carb spray, spray all around the engine top, esp around the upper intake/plenum gasket area, if the engine RPM changes you have a leak.
