I do belive you are trying to put a 4.0L serpentine belt motor into a jeep that came with a 4.2L vbelt .It can be done . lots of trouble though. You should look at putting in the 4.2L engine with the 4.0L head, it will give you an extra 40 Hp over the stock 4.2L and you wont lose the torq. The 4.0L engines have less torq and sometimes come with efi, but this option would be better if your just going to use it on the street only.

Hope that helps, please take a moment to "Accept" my solution

Hi, since these are a little older models, I am unsure if this is possible and I am assuming that you are putting the same size engine in for the swap. Here is a number to call to ask your question, ask for Norman and he should be able to answer any and all questions that you may have which I think is much easier than trying to type it all on the internet. Let me know how this goes and good luck

I wouldnt recommend swapping motors on different models, even if they appear to fit properly. It will always create some king of complication along the way, even if it appears to run smoothly initially.
I dont think they make cross over mounts for older models. You may have to get one fabricated. But you can try various mechanics in your town, who may have one.

Hope that helps. If you found my answer satisfactory, kindly take a moment to "Accept" my solution.

Thanks in advance,
IrishDruid.

I have an 87 f150 5.0 in 87 and I need to know if I can put in 86 5.0 motor in and I need to know where the knock sensor is on the 86 if you have any ideas

Yes, they appear identical engines. The engine wiring for the two years appears identical, down to the same knock sensor. So it is likely in the same position as on your '87. Only difference in the two years, is your 1987 might have an extra emissions solenoid or two, but the engine controls and sensors all appear identical.

1986 cj7 with 1996 inline6 motor water temp.has 2 wires 1986 has 1 wire please help

The 96 uses a temp sensor for the computer to inform it of the temperature. This 2 wire sensor does not control the temp guage. The 86 has a single wire sensor because it controls the guage only

Can i change the starter solinoid on my 87 corvette, or take it to the shop?

usually pretty easy on an old chevy motor unless you have pipes in the way. Jack it up and put some stands under it. I take the negative cable off the battery first. Then take out the 2 starter bolts and turn the starter to where you can access the wires on the solenoid. Remove the nuts on the 2 terminals and remove the wires. Leave the terminal from the solenoid to the starter motor alone. Hopefully the starter will snake past the pipes. If you have a manual tranny, push the starter forward above the motor mount and then bring it back down thru the hole between the clutch slave cylinder and the motor mount. Let me know if you have questions.

i would check the motor mounts to make sure the bolts are tight, then i would check the rear transmission mount bolts, also to make sure they are tight. yes , if the bolts mounted to the tranny need to be replaced, you can normally get them from a auto part store.

you can get a new bell housing to fit the tranny to bolt to the new engine. you should be able to order one on-line. you will just have to make sure the tranny will handle the new engine. you will have to drop the tranny to put the new bell housing to the transmission. its not a very hard job, maybe a couple of hours

TRANSMISSION

The two wheel drive tranny won't work because it will be longer. The tranny that came out of the 4 wheel drive is shorter and the transfer case bolts to the rear of the tranny thus it has a shorter output shaft and a different spline to accommodate the transfer case. You need to find the correct tranny unless you want to change the internals from one tranny to the other.
