It would depend on what the exhaust numbers are. Too much fuel, not enough air, too much oil burning, etc. Generally speaking, you would need to have access to a 4 gas analyzer to know if the repairs improve the numbers to the point of passing. Otherwise, you could spend a set amount of money on tuneup work and other fuel related repairs if there is a set limit of money spent.
Engines are like us humans. The better care they get the longer they last \Change the oil at every 3000 to 4000 miles and do the preoper suggested maintenance by Fords outline in their manual for a long life I own a 2000 Mountaineer with 190000 miles. It still runs like new although the body is starting to rot The oil is changed every 4000 or sooner Tuneups are done at 65000 Suspension is checked every year
200,000-300,000 miles if you keep up with oil changes and belt changes especially the timing belt this is usually the most important belt if it brakes you'll need a new engine. Change this belt around 80-100,000 miles.
If you aren't mechanical, have someone who is check the car out. Specifically, the transmission fluid for color and smell (On toyota's they are to be changed every 30K miles, few drivers do this), and pull the spark plugs to see if they all appear relatively clean (a burnt looking plug indicates an engine problem). Ask to see the maintenance records. Oil should be changed every 3-4,000 miles if regular oil, 8-10,000 if synthetic.
The next BIG thing regarding maintenance is timing belt and water pump at 90,000 miles. Expect 500-700 for this, not at the lexus dealer. Probably double at the lexus dealer.
I would be interested under 12,000. Very interested under 10,000.
FYI, I'm driving a 95 ES300 with 170,000 miles and it runs like a top. These cars require very little in the way of repair if they are maintained. My goal is 300,000 just to see if it can be done. Unfortunately, I drive a total of 1,000 miles a month these days. So it will be a while. On the interior, you can have very nice new leather seats installed if the rest of the interior is in reasonable shape. Cost around $1,000 or a little less.
