Clutch adj. instaled new clutch kit, now it will not disingage enought to shift gears. how do you adjust it

The problem is the clutch cable going into the bellhousing is missing a plasiic ring,a new cable cost around 80 to 90 dollars. Under emploied people do not have this kind of money laing around, I sliced a thick washer, put it in place of missing plastic ring and it workes perfect.Its only a temperary fix ,until they can afford to buy the cable but at least its usable . PS nothing wrong with installation, just not enought thinking of outher possiblites.

Why is my ranger rough on shifting to all gears?


The clutch may be going out. First check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder-if you have a hydraulic clutch. If just a cable operated clutch, check that it is adjusted. The cable will have an adjusting nut to take up slack.

If fluid is full, or if cable is adjusted right, the clutch will probably need replacing: a new clutch disc, new pressure plate, new throw-out bearing. Buy this as a kit for about $150.

1990 chevy silverado wont disingage new clutch and pressureplate...master cylinder and slave cylinders are new and have been bleed extensively...cant figure out why it wont fully disingage


this is really a simple problem to fix. Pull the gear box and turn the clutch pale around because the plate hub centre is hitting on the flywheel stud heads . The clutch plate only go in one way.

95 accent hard to shift to first gear sometimes forth gear.replaced slave plus clutch pump also has new clutch kit.can the linkage be adjusted be great if you could help thanks.


Yes. You can adjust the clutch rod inside the car at the clutch pedal. loosen the 12mm jam nut and unscrew the rod 2 turns at a time and test clutch operation each time.Repeat as necessary. dont forget to retighten the jam nut. Good luck! Scott

I have a problem with shifting from one gear level to another, but clutch preasure is still high and the clutch kit was bought last year December. Could the problem be the clutch kit or the gear box?...

We just bought a 2000 Suzuki esteem, the problem is whenever we start the car, it becomes very difficult to shift between gears when the car is idle, but when the car is on the freeway, shifting works...


The cluch not fully disingaging , ( carpet under the pedel, pedel bent , bushing worn out of pedal, low on fluild in clutch master ( brake fluid ) and bad cluch master or slave or air in system. A damaged clutch will drag too. If it shifts OK with the car shut off standing still trans lube is likly OK too. If it has a clutch cable it may need to be adjusted pull up on the clutch pedal as high as it can go then pust down with your hand it should only go down an inch before it gets harder to pust down as it openes the clutch and shoul continue to go down about 4 or more inches. The pedal should be as high or a little higher than the break paedal. If not the pedal height may be needing to be adjusted higher. Some slave master hydrolic sysems aren't adjusted and have to be replaced to fix lack of enought movement Clutes that are hard to pust in or get much harder as you get closer to the floor the cluch is likly to be worn out and need to be changed with a new clutch kit and resurface the flywheel. The flywheel can change to unflatand the cluch can drag. engine oil getting into the clutch though a leak in the valve cover or rear main can get on the cluch and make it drag and grab.

It feels like the clutch may be going out. It's starting to shift hard, and the clutch has to go at least 2/3 to the floor before it engages. The fluid levels are fine. Any suggestions


you may have a hydrolic clutch .. check for a master cylinder similar to the brake master cyclinder near the clutch pdl .. it may be low on fluid .. .. i am assuming you meant that the clutch had to be near the floor before DISengaging .. if its a mechanical hookup instead then there is an adjustment for that (free pedal adj)

if the adjustment is out of range then you could have a bad throwout bearing .. but usually they make noise when the go bad ..

My 2002 Dakota has been somewhat confused about shifting as well. It showed a code P1762. I dropped the pan to install a new fluid filter and fluid-(use only ATF+3 or ATF+4). Since the pan was off I decided to adjust the bands. The front band controls the 2nd gear cluster. The rear band controls the 3rd gear cluster and reverse. For a 2-3 shift, the transmission shifts back to 1st gear with the front band while the rear band engages 3rd gear. If the front band does not release the 2nd gear clutches before the third gear clutches engage, the transmission binds, which shortens the life of the transmission clutches. If the front band releases too early in the shift, the engine will overspeed (sounds and feels like a slip) during the 2-3 shift.
The front band adjusting screw is on the driver's side above the shift linkage. The rear band is inside the fluid pan near the filter.
1. Loosen band adjusting screw locknut. Then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw
threads if necessary. The front band adjuster is on the outside of the transmission and the locknut requires a 3/4" wrench.

2. Using Inch Pound Torque Wrench C-3380-A, a 3-in. extension and appropriate Torx� socket (T-40), tighten adjusting screw to 72 in-lb. CAUTION: If Adapter C-3705 (from SPX Miller) is needed to reach the adjusting screw, tighten the screw to only 47-50 in. lbs. torque.

3. Back off adjusting screw the number of turns listed below for your transmission.

4. Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten lock-nut to:

41 N�m (30 ft. lbs.) for the front band
34 N�m (25 ft. lbs.) for the rear band
The adjustment screw inside the case is a square head bolt. You will need a 1/4 square head socket to fit your torque wrench.
Band adjustments for each model year:
1994

* Front Band - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 2-1/2 turns (all transmissions)
* Rear Band
o 32/42RH - Tighten to 72 in-LB, back off 4 turns
o 36/37/46/47RH - Tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 2 turns

1995-1996

* Front Band
o 42RH - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 2-1/4 turns
o 46RH - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 2-7/8 turns
o 47RH - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 1-7/8 turns
* Rear Band
o 42RE/RH - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 4 turns
o 46RE/RH - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 2 turns
o 47RE/RH - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 3 turns

1997-1998

* Front Band
o 42RE - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 3-5/8 turns
o 46RE - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 2-7/8 turns
o 47RE - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 1-7/8 turns
* Rear Band
o 42RE - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 4 turns

o 42RE - tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 3 turns. (TSB 21-16-98)
o 47RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 1 7/8 turns
* Rear Band
o 47RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 3 turns
+ The 47RH rear band requires a 1/4" hex driver, the front band requires a
T-30 Torx driver, the filter is held in place by two screws which require a T-20 Torx drive

2000-2002

* Front Band
o 42RE - Tighten band adj. screw to 72 in-lb, back off 3 turns
o 44RE - Tighten band adj. screw to 72 in-lb, back off 1 7/8 turns
o 46RE - Tighten band adj. screw to 72 in-lb, back off 2 7/8 turns
o 47RE - Tighten band adj. screw to 72 in-lb, back off 1 7/8 turns
From Bill Konolday's 47RE notes: I usually go a little looser than factory
specs on this front band - backing off the adjustment screw 2 or 2 1/4 turns.
Depending on the circumstances I have backed off the band up to 2 1/2 turns.
* Rear Band
o 42RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 4 turns
o 44RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 4 turns
o 46RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 2 turns
o 47RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 3 turns

2003

* Front Band
o 48RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 1-3/4 turns
* Rear Band
o 48RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 3 turns

2005

* Front Band
o 48RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds,
back off front band adjusting screw 1-3/4 turns for diesel vehicles,
or 1-1/2 turns, for V-10 vehicles.
* Rear Band
o 48RE - tighten band adj. screw to 72 inch pounds, back off 3 turns

94+ Automatic Transmission Bolt and Nut Torque Specs

* Front band adjustment locknut - 30 ft-lb
* Rear band adjustment locknut - 25 ft-lb
* Transmission pan bolts - 13 ft-lb
I just replaced the solenoid with the recommended transducer and all is fine now. The transducer cost me about $50 at a nearby dealership.

you know some mustangs have an adjustment system on the clutch pedal, and might need adjustment, or if you install a rebuilt clutch instead of a new one some times they come unbalance and vibrate if you did just never again trust a rebuilt clutch kit
