Car overheating i have a 2001 pt cruiser and it has recently started overheating it only gets hot if i run the air or drive for about45 minutes or so its fine on short trips but when i turn the car off the temp still seems to rise for a few minutes before cooling down ive replaced the thermostat its not losing any water i was told when i had it put on diagnostics that i may have a small vacuum leak but they told me that would not cause it to overheat any suggestions

I went round and round with this same problem for almost 2 years. I started dating a guy who is a mechanic and he spent many days looking into this problem. Turns out that he ended up replacing the radiator fan, not the whole radiator. I had chrysler tell me it was a sensor, among other things. The radiator cooling fan (w/shroud) is all one part. Replaced that and it works just fine.

I also own a 2001 pt cruiser and i am currently having to same problem. We have found that it maybe the radiator is clogged up or is clogging. This may possibly cause your radiator to crack ( mine has) . If you find an answer please post the solution.

Thanks

    Hi Jamie80,

The problem is that the radiator is made of metal instead of copper. Which causes the radiator to rust on the inside and causes it to clog and interfer with the ventilation. The solution is that you will have to get a new radiator. I just had mine replaced.

Turn ur car on defrost and check to c if fan is running. It should kick on on defrost. If it does not try checking fan or relay or your fuse. If of does and still gets hot maybe a good coolant flush will work.

Why 2001 chrysler pt cruiser still overheating after I replaced the fan?

When it's up to operating temp feel the upper and lower hoses. They should both be hot. If the lower is cold and the upper is warm than you don't have any flow. A thermostat would be a common fix for this.

2001 PT cruiser overheating.

Note that you will not damage anything unless you don't turn it off when it gets too hot.

So start the car and let is idle to get warm - have the hood open and see if the fans come on. If the temp goes past normal and fans do not kick on, it's usually the fan relay (~$20) - these usually sit in the engine compartment fuse box. Also check the fan fuses - there should be two of them. If that doesn't work, then it would be the temp sensor.

However if your heater is blowing cold when the car is warm, sounds like there is an air-lock. This happens if you don't 'burp' the cooling system properly after flushing the system. Easiest way to check on this is if either the lower or upper radiator hose is not hot when the engine is hot.

Incidentally, if the thermostat is shot, you would not be able to 'burp' the system properly.

My bet is either the thermostat or airlock - or both.

Pt overheating within 5 minutes 2001 2litre auto how do I change cambelt thx mike

Hi,
Engine overheating? Check:
1. Coolant level at cold
2. Coolant leak check for loss of, during "not hot" running condition. (water pump, hoses)
If above is ok, I would replace the thermostat. It's inexpensive and easy enough to do.

Cam belt not addressed in this response...

Hope this helps with the overheating problem... Good luck!

I recently had the same problem with my car. The solution for me was to remove the coolant lines going into the firewall(be sure to let it cool down first)and blow out the heater core with compressed air.I went from blowing barely luke warm air to awesome heat...good luck

did you check the fluid level by removing the rad. cap? Radiator should be full to top. If Chryslers are low on coolant, the heater will not blow warm air.
