Question about 1992 Volkswagen Jetta

2 Answers

Engine problem. I was driving my 1992 Jetta and the motor just shut off and the engine light came on.When I got it stopped I couldn't start it again. It would turn over.A few days later it started but when the engine was running it sounded like a diesel engine when idleing. It is a gas engine. My buddy is a mechanic but he is puzzeled,he never worked on Jetta engines before and he thinks it could be an oil pump if they have them or is it a major problem? If anyone can help that would be great thanks. Michael

Also, on 1992 Jettas they were built with a safety device that automatically shuts off the car if oil levels are too high or too low.

just insider advice

Hi Michael,

The motor shut off and the engine light came on, you won’t start right away and you wait a couple of days and start it again, sounds like your engine was over heated and because it is too hot and the engine frozen.

There are several kinds of engines, water cooling ,oil cooling and air cooling.

Over heated can cause many different problems for the cars, you should check step by step yourself.

Water cooling engine; if you know, you can help somebody.

1. Check the radiator see if you have enough coolant
2. Check the oil see if you have enough oil
3. check the water pump see if the water pump works fine
4. check the thermostat see it is function right.

Suppose your radiator has water or coolant, leave your radiator cap open, start your engine, let it is running 10 to 15 minutes and wait it is getting hot and see the water in your radiator, if the water moves, that means your cooling system works fine, otherwise either the thermostat frozen or the water pump was broken.

You mentioned when you re-start your car, sounds like a diesel engine, please check the where the noise from, if the noise from the water pump area, that means you need to change the water pump. When you change the water pump, change the thermostat at the same time, because when the engine over heated, the thermostat maybe damaged.

Oil cooling engine, check the oil pump. If the noise from the oil pump, you need change it.

Good luck,

Frank

I drive jetta 4 1.6 , while driving car lock itself steering wheel lock and engine stop running in the middle of freeway or every time after 1km then must stop car start engine again

As only the ignition key can lock the steering wheel and stop the motor at the same time I would suggest you replace the ignition lock. This is dangerous. Get it checked out.

Try replacing your Engine Coolant Temp Sensor, it's cheap and easy to replace. Just remember do it when the coolant is cool to work with before you start cracking a pressurized system.
