Question about 2003 Ford Focus

Driver's Seat Heater ZX5 caught fire

. On 29 February 2008, while I was driving on 72 Avenue between 144 and 176 Streets in Surrey, BC, the driver’s seat heater caught fire when I turned it on. There was a strong odour of formaldehyde in the car and extreme heat radiating on to my lower back from the element. I stopped at a gas station at the corner of 72 and 176 in order to determine the source of the problem: the lower seat cushion and seat back cushion were charred and smoking. I shut off the seat heater and continued on my journey.

I have reported this problem to the Service Department of Kamloops Ford, Lincoln Limited, 880 8th Street, Kamloops, BC. The service manager, Jeff Leplante, inspected the damage and agreed that it was serious. However, he did give me to understand that because the car is no longer under warranty, I would have to bear the full cost of the repairs.

In the mean time, I have discovered that Ford Technical Service Bulletin 04B16 dated 08/01/2004 identifies problems with the front seat foam heater cushions in the Ford Focus 2003 model. A related Field Service Action for the Ford Focus 2003 mentions inspection of the seat heater element pads. In addition there is a Customer Satisfaction Program related to TSB 04B16.
It is clear that Ford have already identified a technical problem with these seat heaters.

We have seen related problems in South Africa. It relates to a poor earth whereby the seat frame becomes the heater-scary! My advice is to seek legal advice, you may make enough money to buy a Mercedes. Then the seat will work well but not much else!

Seat heater comes on by itself in 2004 yukon denali

Heated Seat Components
The heated seat system consists of the following components:
• Driver and passenger heated seat switches
• Driver and passenger seat back heater elements
• Driver and passenger seat cushion heater elements
• Driver and passenger seat back temperature sensors
• Driver seat module
• Driver door module
• Passenger door module
When there are modules involved in the operation of any componet that's acting up , the module's electronic's could be the culprit ! But without testing who's to say what the problem could be !
I would have it check for DTC'S
DTC B2425 or B2430
The driver and passenger seat heaters are controlled by the driver seat module. Power is supplied to the driver seat cushion and back heater elements through individual voltage supply circuits. Power is supplied to the passenger seat cushion and back heater elements through a common voltage supply circuit. All of the driver and passenger seat heater elements are grounded by the driver seat module through individual low side drive control circuits. The heater element control circuits are pulse width modulated to ground by the driver seat module in order to control the seat temperatures by regulating the current flow through the heater elements.
DTC B2435 or B2440
The driver seat module relies on inputs from thermistors installed in the driver and passenger seat backs to control heated seat temperatures. The thermistors are 2-wire sensors supplied with a 5-volt referenced signal circuit and low reference circuit from the driver seat module. Resistance through the thermistors varies with temperature causing the heated seat sensor signal circuit voltage levels to decrease as the seat back temperatures rise.
Install a scan tool.
Start the engine.
Turn the heated seat ON.
With a scan tool, observe the Heated Seat Sensor parameter in the data list for the driver seat module.
Does the scan tool indicate that the heated seat sensor parameter is within the specified range?
0.078-4.94 V

It's now a recall item. See below.

Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
Potential Number of Units Affected: 686287

Year: 2009
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Traverse
Manufactured
from: 2008-07-06
to: 2012-02-29
Recall Date: 2015-06-30
-->
Summary:

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured January 3, 2007, to February 29, 2012, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured July 6, 2008, to February 29, 2012, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured September 15, 2006, to February 29, 2012, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured August 17, 2006, to March 18, 2010. The affected vehicles, equipped with the power liftgate option, have gas struts that hold the power liftgate up when open. These struts may prematurely wear and the open liftgate may suddenly fall.

If the open liftgate unexpectedly falls, it may strike a person, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit so that the motor will prevent the rapid closing of the lift gate, free of charge. Owners were mailed interim notices on August 3, 2015. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. What's your problem?2008 Ford Taurus X, drivers seat heater w/n work. WHen you press the button for the seat heater to come on the light flashes and goes out.

Check fuses, check connections, check relays, if you get power to heater and it does not work the heater is likely at fault.
