You might have air in the system, a plugged heater core, or you could have a blend door that is stuck in the cold position. First run the car with the coolant cap off and recheck the coolant level and add as needed. Also look for a bleeder screw somewhere near the thermostat housing. When the engine gets warm open the bleed screw until some coolant comes make sure the heater is on and the blower is running. Carefully if you can feel the heater hoses going into and out of the firewall They should be warm to hot and the same temperature. If ons hose is hotter than the other one you may have a blocked heater core. If they are both hot and still the car has no heat you are looking for a bad blend door or actuator.
Also you failed to tell me if you have a temperature gauge on the car and what it reads. this also could be helpful..
I would look at the A/C condenser fan or the switch that triggers it and test for power/function. It sounds like the gas isn't condensing due to lack of air flow, until it gets enough at speed to exchange heat through the condenser and bring the temps down.
try feeling your heater hoses going from the engine to the heater core. they should be hot at operating temperature. If one is hotter than the other noticably it would indicate a restriction in the core most likely. A partially stuck thermostat could also cause loss of heat but you say the temp is normal. Start with checking hose temperature if they are both on the cool side compared to the radiator hose then further diagnostics are necessary. hope this helps. Keep in touch.
in the case of no heat and slight smell of antifreeze i would back flush the heater core and also check the carpet around the heater vents under the dash if the heater core is leaking the carpet may be wet. find the 2 hoses going to the firewall if you start the motor and let it warm up with the heater on 1 should be hot and one should be cold disconnect them and use a garden hose to flush water in the hose thats cold.
if the temp gauge is reading hot, and theres poor heat then go under the hood near the firewall and locate the two heater hoses going into the firewall, they will be rubber hoses, not the metal lines. when the car is all warmed up feel each hose, they should both be hot and roughly the same temperature, if one is hot and the other luke warm or cold then the heater core is plugged up, pull the hoses off and blast it out back and forth with a garden hose.
Did you open the radiator cap and make sure the radiator is full of coolant? Sometimes the hose from the coolant reservoir to the radiator becomes plugged, and the radiator will become low on coolant even when the plastic reservoir is full. Low water levels will prevent the coolant system from getting hot water from the engine to the radiator or heater cores. This will cause the engine to run hotter while the heater appears to not be working.
first make sure the radiator is topped off or full also the overflow is at proper level .. feel the hoses going into the cars firewall to see if they are warm or hot. if cold then the car is not letting hot water into the heater core inside the car . there is a control outside the firewall that might be at fault .
Let your engine warm up with the rad. cap off and see if the coolant level drops. and make sure your overflow is full. It blows cold air because there is no water getting to the heater core. And it shows a normal(ish) temp because the water needs to be touching the temp. sensor. I really do think there is air in the system and there is not enough coolant but hard to tell from here. Also as with overheating any time make sure to check your oil and look for any coolant as the head gasket seldomly holds together if the motor overheats.
