Question about 2002 Ford Escape

Alternator after 3 batteries and the alternator gone through twice the battery lite is on.was told this could also be the computer going bad

Must of the time this can be caused by a faulty voltage regulator. If the battery works during daytime and during nigh time or heavy power loads fail, it could be faulty diodes. Both cases require removing alternator from vehicle and replacing the damaged parts.

01 sunfire battery stays at 12.5v


I guess my first question is what is the alternator output at idle ?
You can't test an alternator by disconnecting the battery like we did 40 yrs ago with generators. The alternator needs the battery in circuit to perform. And now with computers, you can cook a computer by disconnecting the battery with the engine running.
You should have 3 wires coming out of the alt. The large red wire goes to the starter with a fuseable link. The other two go to the computer. They turn the regulator in the alternator on and off.
What is the voltage on that red wire with the engine running ?

Dash battery lite stays on and car runs fine...battery was replaced 9/11/2011. Could battery have gone bad?


Sounds like the alternator..You can check with a voltage meter,,should be putting out about 13.5 to 14.0 volts..

We have an 2000 mpv . got a new battery which went dead after one year now the new battery also has gone dead the alternator was replaced and we are wondering if we bought the correct size battery


well normally the manufactures would list a battery type in your manual or the manufactures of the battery has a catalog with the different vehicles and the recommended battery..

things to check..

1.) look for a surface discharge meaning that some stuff on the vehicle is pulling more power than it should or some device isnt shutting off properly, like the trunk light or door lights etc..

2.) check that the alternator is pushing 14.2 volts to the battery ,, around 13.6 to 14.5 is fine any more or any less will greatly reduce battery life, this can be caused by defective wiring as well so have that checked

3.) if you have an amplifier that isnt cutting off properly well that can cause this as well by greatly reducing battery life. if you have an amplifier you would need a bigger than slandered battery and in some cases alternator upgrades..

Ok points when buying a battery..

1.) buy a battery that has the longest warranty period you can get,, If its prorated its just like not having any warranty..

2.) Buy Spectype (OEM), or brand name ones like AcDelco, Die Hard, Bosch etc..

3.) Go with a slightly larger battery if you car needs 550cca (which i think it does) go with 850cc or around that, this helps if you have a surface discharge and basically prolongs life..

I have replaced the alternator in our windstar twice in the last several years I had to replace the windshield wiper motor 3 months ago. My battery is 2 years old. Now the alternator & battery are dead...


well the good thing is if there is a spike the battery will take it before other electrical componets check in the distribution box for bad relays & fuses

They probably had a series of batteries that were bad, and unfortunately, you got 2 of them. Take a credit (as it must still be under warranty) and get another one, or buy another brand. I don't think it has anything to do with your car.

check for open wiring first around the alt. sometimes will tear the insulator and arc off.You can see this at night in the dark.Most regulators are in the alternator.

Squeaky belt and battery light on now


+++ been told to fix blue smoke...piston rings gone .

Piston rings, valve seals are a good guess for cause of blue smoke. Engin oil additives for high-mileage engines can help the blue smoke problem... Pep Boys and the like -- many different products -- just make sure it's for stopping smoke, not cleaning engines...

+++ squealin....fan belt gone.

Has the alternator belt been tightened? If not, this could be causing both symptoms: dead battery & squealing

+++ battery light on...alternator gone.

Again, this could just be a loose belt, and most likely is the problem...

1990 Honda Civic dx intermittant alternator failure


along with the relay issue they some models have a very tight route for wiring from the battery to the main harness components check very carefully for any tight spots the wires may be severed also check the frame ground from the - battery terminal wire and connection itself. last suggestion do you get lights and accesories when this happens or is everything dead if you do it could be a bad connection to the starter and have nothing to do with the alternator or battery
