You didn't mention if automatic or manual but the first is something you aren't likely to do at home, the second, only if you are willing to buy a service manual and are very meticulous.
I've done several but don't advise anyone with no exprerience in dealing with precision mechanics to attempt it.

Mazda bravo b2600 gearbox growles and grumbles. cant select 2nd or 4th gear. 1st, 3rd,5th & reverse ok.

I am sorry to tell that the gearbox need to have some major repair. It is also not advisable to continue driving as the gearbox can breakdown completely leaving you stranded. At least one the cluster drive gears in the gearbox is damaged (gear tooth stripped off) that will result in that only some of the gears being able to be selected. The broken off tooth are still in the gearbox and due to the oil movement in the gearbox it can be "washed up " in between to engaged gears destroying those as well. This will happen up to the point where there are no gear selection at all.

Reverse not working 2006 KIA Sorento

Your right about too much electronics ,and no the front clutch works all motion in the gearbox ,now iam not sure about this model but the renault gearbox that i have worked on fairly regular compared to other makes has a solonoid inside the gearbox that is operated by the lever for drive and reverse ,now the problem here is you have to remove the gearbox sump to test it ,also here in spain the parts are not sold seperate but only a complete exchange gearbox and if you ask at the dealer they will want to just change the gearbox as more profit in this than a repair but try a independante auto box garage which you will have in america or the Uk even germany but spain?? Now here their called granny boxes for old pensioners from northern europe and you would be laughed at trying to ask for a repair ,

Holden suburban column auto...car won't go into reverse and takes a while to change to 2nd gear...is it major

It might be.
You should first change the gearbox oil and replace the gearbox oil filter, then retry.
If you are still having an issue, then check the vehicle's speed sensor and TCM.

Sounds to me like a problem that needs to be evaluated by a professional auto repair technician so the damage can be accurately assessed.

Most likely an internal gearbox problem, but I would first check the shift linkage at the gearbox end, see if you can disconnect it and change out of reverse from there.
