Question about 1992 Volkswagen Cabriolet

2 Answers

Overheating The car tends to overheat regardless of whether it is sitting idle, or driving down the road. The fan has been replaced, the fan relay has been replace, now head gasket, new heater hose flange. Radiator is in good shape, no leaks from water pump or radiator hoses. None of the troubleshooting in my Hanes manual seems to fit the thermostat being bad. Please help! It's driving my husband nuts.

I've got the same problem, It's a fun car, and gets great gas mileage, but you need a new engine. My guess is it makes a horrible knocking sound too?

it sounds like the radiator fans are not coming on. Check the fuses and relays for the fans. there is a temperature switch to control when the fan(s) comes on. If you have AC then the fans should come on when you turn on the AC.

i would check and make sure the cooling fan is operating,if not it will overheat sitting still.a thermostat will cause overheating whether or not it sits still or driving(more so when driving).the same if it has a bad water pump although it may circulate just enough coolant when driving to not overheat with air flow also adding a cooling effect.if you don`t have a leak then i would say the water pump is okay as they usually will leak before causing a overheat problem.make sure the cooling fan is working and the rad does not have anything stopping the air flow over the rad and is not stopping coolant flow in the rad.

The initial problem points to the radiator fan(s) not running at any road speed. Check the fan(s) for noise-free turning by hand. Check fan fuse and relay (swap with similar relay). Turn on the air conditioner which should immediately turn on the fan(s). Overheating while driving could very well be the thermostat--you will need to drain the cooling system before replacing the unit. Blow out the radiator core with compressed air from the engine side to remove bugs and other debris first. Hope this helps!

Classic signs of a bad water pump. When on the freeway, the circulation of coolant through the system is increased due to the speed but once you slow down, it will tend to overheat. Please post back with any other questions or just to rate the solution. Thanks very much!

Overheating- smaller fan is fried would this cause it to overheat

Is it an hour idling? If you are overheating going down the road, this is either a thermostat, or a plugged radiator. The fan will contribute to overheating sitting still.

Car overheats while coolant is full

Check to see if the electric radiator fan works, run the car and turn on the a/c on high to see if the radiator fan comes on. If it doesn't come on then check the fuses and relay to the fan and wire harness to the fan. Check the radiator it self, check the out side to make sure the heat exchange finns are not plugged up with winter mud and dirt, and the inside look clean and corroded or plugged with rust.
If that is ok then change the thermostat and the hose, a soft hose will collapse and restrict the flow of antifreeze. The last cause would be a bad water pump and not pushing the antifreeze as much as it should.
Good luck and hope this helps.

Nissan 1999 Maxima is over heating

Most likely not. Pulling the thermostat will get you home, but not a great fix. Is it overheating driving down the road or sitting still? If it is overheating driving down the road, look for a clogged radiator or stuck thermostat. If it overheats sitting still, look for your cooling fans not coming on.

This means your thermostat is bad. Needs to be replaced. Also do coolant flush.
