Occasionally won't turn over

My 97 cavalier has been starting just fine most of the time and out of the blue it won't even turn over. the radio and my lights will be working. then i'll try it a few hours to a couple days later and it works just fine again. I originally thought that my starter was goin bad so a few days ago i got a new one along with silinoid. Started no problem this morning, i drove it to the gas station, and when i went to leave it wouldn't even turn over. I don't know what to do and i'm scared everytime i leave my house that i may not be able to get home. please help

I have a 94 with the same problem. It turns out that it is the park safety switch located on the back drivers side of the engine hooked to the top of the trans. It is such a possition that it catches all the weather and the connections corrode. It is a treat to get your hand on it but it can be done if you can wiggle it side to side chances are it will start. The permant fix would be to unplug clean throughly and lubricate.

97 cavalier starts and runs ok from a cold start after a few minutes of warm up it starts to run rough and miss. If i try to drive it it will start out ok but won't shift automaticly but shifts fine m

Sounds like possibly more than on problem, crankshaft position sensor, or ignition module likely on starting prob which maybe affecting shifting due to hard code in ecm, or shift prob could be shift solenoid in valve body of transmission. Both parts readily available from local parts store

97 cavalier, won't start, turns Problem with the Chevrolet Cavalier 1997 Cavalier 97 cavalier, won't start, turns over and pops a little, has spark and fuel. checked plugs and wires. 2.2 liter, quit on...

I just had this problem with a Sunfire that had the 2.2...I found the timing chain tensioner broke apart and not the car out of time.If it is the tensioner you will probably want to drop the oil pan and make sure there are not and particles of the tensioner in there.

I have 97 camaro it starts and drive fine but when i shut it off it wont start back up until it sits for a few hours?

We had a problem like this in our 97 Camaro with the V6. It would run fine until my wife went somewhere with it, parked it and then wouldn't restart. When it would sit for about an hour then it would start again. It turned out to be the crank position sensor, when the electronic part of it got hot enough it couldn't sense correctly and tell the computer how to time the spark. All it would do is crank without firing. So once we had that sensor replaced it ran good again. Good luck I hope this helps! I'm on to the next problem it's having, an occasional battery drain and a radio and electric windows that die when they want to and come back later. BuzzieTN

Not starting

Air/fuel/spark. check the 3, and then do a dummy test. I know , im not insulting you, but my dakota wont start if my gascap isnt screwed down all the way, it throws a sensor and it wont start. So just do all the dummy stuff you know has to be done to start it, put it in park, close all the doors, stuff like that, never know, could be something simple. if not, as above, Air/fuel/spark. need all 3 to start an engine.
