Question about 1998 Chrysler Town & Country

1 Answer

Serpintine belt The serpintine belt continually falls off. We thought it was only in the rain when it gets wet but it fell off today. Dry as a bone outside. We are thinking it may be a bad pulley. I have fixed this many, many times and it continues to fall off. I did put a new power steering pump and pulley on thinking this was the problem but belt continues to fall off. I am at a lose at this point.

There is a factory upgrade that changes some of the idler pullers from being smooth to having grooves. Also you get a serpantine belt with grooves on both sides. After getting this done -- cost at dealer approx. $300.00 -- I have not had any problems with the serpantine belt coming off. Just changing the tensioner will not fix the problem.

How do you hold the tensioner in place when replacing the belt?

I have a similar problem. However, I just need help with replacing the belt tensioner, near the alternator. Is this a do-it-yourself job, or does this need shop repair? What are the usual cost for this type of repair?

It sounds to me like the belt tensioner pulley is bad.Its spring loaded and this pulley is what keeps the belt in place.

The driver side seat belt getting wet

You quite obviously have a water leak, the interior near the leak must have all the trim panels removed and then it is leak tested with a rain simulator. Water leaks like this are extremely hard to find since this has likely leaked since it was new 11 years ago and the previous owner ignored it. You will need the expertise of the dealer on this, it will be expensive labor wise.

A couple of thoughts come to mind, do you have an aftermarket alarm? If you do it may to be reprogrammed due to the battery being disconnected. The other thought i have, is if the ecu got wet internally from the rain, it could be damaged. Check and see if its wet around the area where the ecu is, hopefully its not, because i hate it when a module or ecu gets wet . Goodluck

I would think your belt might be stretched and need replaced. If you look at your belt tensioner there should be lines that indicate proper wear position. If the line is all the way to one side and not in the middle it indicates that the belt is too long.

I suggest that you look for secondary voltage leaks from the ignition system. Moisture causes dirt to become a pathway for this spark voltage. Look inside all wire connections, for any corrosion. A scope can test this, but typically a home does not have a scope...

Wet floors on passenger side after it rains.

Is it possible the water is actually coming from the A/C evaporator case, whose DRAIN IS CLOGGED ? The water produced by the A/C then leaks out of the case, down under the carpeting, then depending how vehicle is parked, can flow to the rear floors and carpet. Hope this helps

Serpintine belt fell off

The most common problem with this is the smooth version of serpentine belt tensioner. Yours like all others wear out and tilt and the rain or snow gives it that extra nudge it needs to slip off, the tensioner cannot be repaired but must be replaced. About cheapest is $65 from Autozone and is changed from underneath with a 15mm wrench, long arms, and alot of patience because you will only get 1/10th a turn on the nut per wrench position. This repair should fix you up for a long time. Good Luck!

An alternative to this is to purchase a more expensive conversion kit which consists of a grooved version tensioner and special serpentine belt for $195, the installation is the same.

NOTE:Ensure that the plastic shroud that protects the belts from wheel well and ground spray is still in place, it is not uncommon for unknowing indiduals to remove it and leave them off.

Serpentine belt keeps popping off

Check alignment of the belt and check the condition of the belt because once it comes off it will continue to come off because the strands in the belt are broken.
