Question about 1997 Ford Explorer AWD
This may be a challenge....
I live in South Africa and purchased a New Ford "Ranchero" Outback UTE 1997 model in that year.
As I understand it these vehicles were manufactured in Australia and imported into South Africa around 1996 - 1998.
It is a straight six 4.0 L motor with fuel injection with "computer combustion" - presumably the engine management system.
It came standard with double fuel tanks, underbody steel plate protection and "Hydrotrack (Some kind of limited slip) differential"
It has a four speed automatic gearbox with economy "overdrive".
The vehicle is well maintained and in showroom condition and currently has 168 000 KM on the clock.
It has an intermittant problem, most likely electrical, where it operates perfectly for days, weeks, even months without fail - then unpredictably and without warning - fails to start. This happens with no discernable pattern, be it ambient weather, temperature, operating condition - except that it never fails while driving. (Very occassional "flat spot" when running cold).
After stopping and switching off, It fails to re-start.
The motor turns vigerously, but no spark and no fuel injection.
We have checked , changed everything including distributor and electronic module, plug leads, relays, fuses and a few other bits and pieces.
While in the breakdown state there is no signal.
Without any change, it will start. However, this could be after minutes, hours or days, weeks.
The only constant is that it will at some time, start and run.
Then its all OK until the next time!!

if it has the rear bumper collision cut off switch check that. it may be intermittent.
short it out or open which ever it needs.
find where it leads to engine /computer as it may be there too.
check the ignition switch and the wiring firewall distribution box.
the hard part is you are likely loosing ground somewhere.
does it have vehicle entry alarm if so see about bypassing.
