Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

Headlight replacement. My exsisting headlight has a major crack and there is glass floating around in there. Headlamps only last for a few days. I was told by my mechanic to buy a used Headlight and replace it myself. Since then, I've had about four people look at this darn thing. No one can figure out how to get the exsisting light off. The screws look pretty nasty too - seized and damaged. It looks like the grill may also have to come off to access some of the assembly (a major project for us rookies). My questions are: 1. Can I do this myself if I find/buy the proper manual? 2. Should I take the part to the mechanic and ask him to install since it was his idea? (I know taking your own parts into the shop is frowned upon). 3. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Lo beam headlight on right side not working.

try using a voltmeter on the plug for the bad headlight. turn on the ignition, and turn the headlight switch. If the voltmeter shows no voltage, then either your switch or the wiring leading to the headlight has gone bad. check wiring for breaks to headlight first. good-day! if no voltage.

The fuse for the left headlight keeps blowing every time i turn the headlight on .I already replaced the switch, checked for cracked wires or bare and still get the same result

Obviously there is a short to ground or a major draw.
You should be able to use a meter to check resistance in the circuit between the light and the fuse.
You said "switch" so have you checked the headlight switch and dimmer switch too ? And does the fuse blow if the headlight bulb is unplugged ?

Why does my headlight bulb keep burning out once replace

Check the fusebox and ensure that the correctly rated fuse is in the slot for your headlamps. Also, when installing the headlamp, wear gloves and try not to touch the glass with your hands. Make sure that you don't twist it too hard when installing as this can cause a small crack in the base and will make the lifespan very short for the bulb. If the next bulb goes out, take it to the dealer/repair shop- it most likely is an electrical problem sending an unregulated voltage or a spike to the bulb causing it to burn out quickly. When you install the new bulb, make sure that it doesn't flicker or shine brighter than the other headlamp - even when pressing the gas pedal. If so , it can indicate an electrical problem that needs to be addressed at the dealership/repair shop.

How to replace headlight glass cover

The car should have a plastic headlight assembly. What you do is replace the whole assembly. Usually has two clips that you pull to release the whole assy.If it has the old style rectangular glass headlamps then there is a chrome rectangular ring with 4 phillips screws 2 above and 2 below. You will need a good long phillips screwdriver and push hard as there will be some rust on the threads that you must break free without stripping out the head of the screws. Be sure to check to see if there is corrosion in the plug for the wiring harness and clean/replace as needed before reinstalling

I am in the process of buying a jeep Laredo which seems to have condensation inside the headlamp glassis it possible to clean this/replace the glass/or is it best to buy a new pair

Condensation is deemed to happen if ambient temperature is lower than inside the headlamp and humidity inside of headlight is too high.
From a headlight design perspective, you cannot lower ambient temperature. Not much can be done with temp inside headlight either. However, humidity levels on the inside can be reduced. Most designs usually have 2 or 3 air vents to keep humidity below condensation threshold levels.
This might sound complicated, but the phenonomen is exactly the same as windows in a winter home and humdity levels inside. Too much showering, and bathroom window fogs up. Venting will reduce condensation.

You might wonder why headlamps are not designed to be 100% air tight, so that no humidity enters? Well, that would be in an ideal world with no heat losses in bulbs. As the headlights goes through continous warm-cold-warm-cold cycles as you turn light on and off, the air and plastic will expand and retract. This creates pressure changes, which will move a slight amount of air in and out. So instead of forcing the air to be inside, air is moved through controllable passages, so that minimum of road dirt will enter.

If condensation disappears within a week. Moisture can have been sucked up in high pressure wash. This should normally dissapate within a week by itself.

If condensation amount stays constant, then there is crack(s) in headlight that lets in water. This can be siliconed, depending where the crack is, or a replacement headlight should be considered.

How to assemble a 2000 honda accord headlamps

Its actually pretty straight forward. Disconnect the headlight. Then their are two bolt on the top the the headlight. Remove those then remove the wheel of the car. Then their are three more bolts bellow the headlight All three facing from the outside of the fender to the center of the car.

Then once you have those 5 bolts out. Pull the headlight forward and up. Their are two tabs that go into the fender.
