1978 Ford Pick-up with 351m engine WITH NO SPARK.

I HAVE CHANGED EVERY ELECTRICAL PART I COULD FIND ON THIS TRUCK EXCEPT THE DISTRIBUTOR AND IT WILL STILL NOT FIRE. WHEN THE MOTOR IS TURNING OVER THERE IS NO SPARK BUT WHEN YOU LET UP ON THE STARTER IT SPARKS. WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?

    I have a 1978 ford f250 351m. When it starts it will run about 15 minutes then shut down like you turned the key off, and will not restart. There is no spark. there is a spark when you turn the key but as it turns over there is none. I have replaced module and the coil and wires rotor and cap. I had the module tested and it tested good.

If module is fine try replacing pick-up coil located in distributor.

Hi,

Try connecting the ignition system's B+ straight to the battery's positive terminal. Possible reasons are:
1. starting drawing too much current nothing left for the ignition system;
2. ignition switch/connectors, joints corroded/loose.

The ignition system's B+ is the switched +12 when the IGN switch is turned to ON. When you crank the engine this normally would go down. If for any of the 2 reasons above this could go to zero hence no spark.

If you are using the contact point style, the IGN B+ is the + terminal of the IGN coil. If you are using the electronic module type, then the IGN B+ would be one of the wires going into the module. To verify, a DVM would be effective. This would also display if the IGN B+ goes down when cranking. When where the IGN B+ is connected to your system, hardwire an insulated auto wire from that point straight to the battery. This would simulate IGN ON condition, as if the ignition switch is set to the ON position. With the system's IGN B+ tied directly to the battery's positive terminal, crank your engine and verify that there is spark. If yes then the solution could be:
1. defective ignition switch;
2. loose/burnt connectors/junction joints.

An easy way around is to use a relay to switch/provide the IGN B+.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Usually a tune-up will help. Distributor points, spark plugs and check vacuum lines around base of carburetor.

No spark

There's no emergence switch, if there was it would only be for fuel and not spark, there four thing to get spark,
ignition control module, ignition coil, distributor pick up assembly and spark plug wire's check for spark at coil, more then likely it's going to be your distributor pick up assembly, the pick up sit in side your ignition distributor, replace it and it will start, hope this was very helpful.

Transmission for a 1978 Ford F100

The transmission should have the label "FMX" upon the center lower drivers side of the body. This was Ford's largest and heaviest tranny they ever made for commercial(privately owned) trucks.They only produced this model for 8 years.

if the motor is out, you can drill small hole and use a slide hammer set up.if its still in the vehicle take small punh or chisel and knock the loose dont knock then in just hit them on the edge, they do make a replacement that is rubber and you tighten them in howevr the steal ones are much more riable too use
