Re: vechicle speed sensor
I,m kind of afraid to answer now because even if im doing it here for free people keep marking my answer as inapropiate
but i will give you and advise or recomendation but if i keep getting negative feedback i will quit helping people here
i won't tell you where the sensor is but will give you a close idea
and a good tip,
before you mess with the sensor make sure your tire size is the right size for your car, you should have a tag somewhere behind the doors telling you the right size or a big tire shop will tell you what the size should be, and if not right you can do 1 of two things, reprogram the computer ti the actual size on your car or replace the tires, but if the tires are right the but a new sensor most of times has a two wire conector and look arrown the transmission for something similar, sometimes is close to the axels i hope and this help and i hope not to get this answer as inapropiate you know kind of afraid now
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Manual tranny or Autotmatic.?
by speed i guess you mean veh. speed sensor. VSS,
on all 96 Suzuki's with the electronically shift transmission A/T there
are 2, vss sensors.
One in the speedo. and one in the transmission trail shaft.
why not post symptoms, or evidence.
like, my speedo MPH, is dead. or
my ECU reports VSS is dead. (DTC errors)
or my A/T is stuck in limphome mode and its showing DTCs for VSS2.
or I put a A/T ECU in to my M./T CAR?
the ECU uses VSS1 to calculate engine load ( very important)
THe TCM (tranny brain) uses VSS2 to shift electronically
if the TCM sees VSS2 fail, it switches to backup VSS1
and may go to TCM limphome mode and skip gears.
first metro hit.
vss1 is clear there, seen as reed switch.
see that, that is VSS1, it clicks a magic count for every mile
VSS2 , measures l tail shaft speed, true MPH, and can actually
see transmission slip, and warn you . VSS2 is very accurate.
in later years, VSS1 was abandoned. for obvious reasons.
LSI 4cylinder or 3cylinder? engine. , all answer USA cars.
all answers now, are 3cylinder
did the odometer quiet too?
and in USA< connect any scan tool and see if VSS died.
the usa 96, 1.0L 3cyl has the VSS sensor in the speedo
and when the cable snaps, Speedo to transaxle flex drive cable.
the speed goes dead
the odometer goes dead
and Vss goes dead.
easy huh, if all 3 are dead.
but if speedo ONLY goes dead, that means ITS dead.
vss= veh.speed sensor. or MPH sensor.
You misunderstand code, there is a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) it's problem is that it is giving an intermittent signal. The VSS is what tells the speedometer how fast you are going (among other things) it is located in the transmission (transaxle). '91 is right around the time when they were going away from mechanical speedometer cables so it may or may not have one depending on the production date. If it has a cable the VSS is built into the speedo gear housing. If there is no cable, the VSS is in the same location on the tranny it just has no provision to drive the speedo cable If you have the new part it may help you to find it on the car but it should be in the left side of the transmission housing near where the left drive axle goes into the case. The VSS gear actually drives off of the very end of that axle inside the gear case. I think it is a 10mm head bolt that retains the VSS.
is the CEL out? check engine lamp out?
is the odometer dead too.
if you scan the PCM is MPH dead???? look is it.
if not dead, in the OBD2 PID stream then the speedo is bad.
if the OBD2 PID stream shows dead VSS then it is dead.
VSS is veh, speed sensor.
the tool is $9 (USB obd2 scanner)
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON LEVEL SOLID GROUND.THE VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR LOCATED ON THE TRANSAXLE ON THE OUT PUT SHAFT HOUSING.YOU NEED TO DISCONNECT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FROM THE VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR.THEN REMOVE THE MOUNTING BOLT WITH DRAW VSS SENSOR FROM TRANSAXLE.REPLACE THE VSS OR VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR AND O - RING.YOU ARE DONE.INSTALL THE NEW VSS SENSOR AND NEW O - RING IN TRANSAXLE. THATS ALL.
the speed sensor is on the outside of the transmission where the speedo cable used to attach, this has a two wire connector, but I really doubt the problem is the VSS, more likely the electonic speedo is defective, this is a common symptom of a defective speedo. My experience? 35 year Ford factory trained Master technician.
to test vechicle speed sensor.safely raise front of vechicle.block back wheels besure you are on level ground.get some help to do this.you need a digital volt meter set it on AC SCALE.TURN IGNITION ON DONT START ENGINE.TAKE VOLT METER BACK PROB THE VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR CONNECTOR.TURN YOUR WHEEL WITH ONE HAND YOU SHOULD GET 0.5 VOLTS.AS YOU SPIN WHEEL FASTER YOUR VOLTS ON AC SCALE SHOULD INCREASE.IF IT DOES NOT WORK.IF WIRES ARE OKAY.YOUR VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR BAD OR THE MAGNET GEAR IN TRANSAXLE IS BROKE..
This is an electronic speedo, could be several things but probably 1st and easiest thing to try is repalceing the vehicle speed sensor(vss). Also need to know if check engine light is on, and if any other electrical items are malfunctioning.
