A battery symbol with a + in it mean the ALT is not working properly, Lines accross could be anything??? Could be the belt has come loose and your ALT is not charging, and also the fan to radiator is not spinning (same belt drives both). Need more info.

Hyundai Elantra keeps dying despite my electronics being off.

Does the car crank slowly, or the starter clicks when you attempt to start it? If the alternator or voltage regulator is bad, the battery would continue to lose energy and appear to be bad. Alternators need to be fed voltage since they don't have magnets to excite the windings. On my Volvo, sometimes the indicator lights don't come on when I turn the ignition on, before actually cranking the engine. When this happens, I know from experience that the battery won't charge. Do you get any dash lights showing a problem?

You can check the voltage at the battery when the engine is running; it should be well over 12 volts if charging.

If a trunk, glove compartment or interior light is on, that can run the battery down too.

Yesterday when I went to work the battery and brake light were on when I got off the exit to get to work the battery and brake lights went off. Approxmitaly 12 hours later when I started the car to go home...

Try a day time running light modual, these things are notorious for messing up,and since they are supposed to work when the car is charging it seems like the logical solution.

My check charging system light keeps coming on. I replaced the alternator about 2 years ago, and the battery about 10 months ago. Trying to figure out the possible problem before taking it to a shop.

Check the voltage ot the battery when the light is on. Ity should be approx 13.6 volts. If its around 12 volts, the alternator isnt charging. BUT just beacause it isnt charging, doesnt mean its bad, wirng has to be verified good, and connection.

has this vehicle got antifreeze in it or are you one of these that lives in the south and never puts any in because it doesnt get cold enough ,same thing here in spain with the stupid english who come to live here ,stand up the bar and reckon they know it all with their la de da accents .Well your problem is caused by a blocked radiator that has gunged up with the rust that occurs inside your engine ,which is caused by no antifreeze to stop the corrosion as for the battery ??well they can last a month or ten years ,buy a bosch battery next time and not a cheepie .Anyway best of british with it and as a not i have just changed a jeep rad ,same model a 99 ,and the plastic **** rad was 600euros here in spain

Misfire and check engine light-flashes 12 times

There is a dead cylinder, so its not getting a spark at one spark plug. Check it at Autozone for free, that will tell you where the trouble is.

I have a 1.8L 2003 Audi TT Roadster. About 2 months ago after not driving the car for a week, I the battery went dead, but I did not get any warning lights. Replacing the battery seemed to fix the problem....

Hi,

Thanks for using Fixya!

Sounds like you have an alternator problem. The alternator may have gone bad due to non use. Some parts inside may have rusted out and got damaged. Better bring your car to your local mechanic and have the alternator checked.

Have a wonderful day.

My car sometimes wont start and when it does it cuts out and dies

Put a voltmeter on battery. It should say something like 12 volts. Start motor and see if you have about 14.5 volts while running. If not your charging system has failed.
