1999 Jeep Cherokee

Problem after starting

i have a 99 cherokee with a 4.0L about 130,000 miles.. about 60 seconds after i start it it will start spitting and sputtering while its doing this you can hear it sucking alot of air. if i give it gas it will rev like it should but if i hold it steady it falls on its face.. after a few minutes of this it seems to run and drive ok.. this happends hot or cold everytime. and ideas would be great thank you!

I have had the same exact problem. How do I resolve this?

99 Cherokee's don't have carburetors...they have throttle bodies since its fuel injected.

I would perform the following in order:
  1. Clean your throttle body and remove any carbon build up. Its recommended to remove the IAC and other items and clean thoroughly.
  2. Check the IAC (Idle Air Control circuit) to make sure it is working correctly. If its bad or dirty, it will cause the engine to stall at idle.
  3. Check for ant intake manifold vacuum leaks. When you mentioned that it sounds like its sucking lots of air, chances are a vacuum hose came off
  4. Check your spark plugs.
  5. Your coil could be going bad.

Have you checked that the airfilter isn't blocked or damp? What about water in the carb?
