Question about 1987 Toyota Supra

Clutch yes it has leaked into the car and the carpet has clutch fluid on it. I just need to know if it would be my master cylinder or my slave cylinder and how to fix it. I'm a do it yourself kinda guy and plan to tackle this problem. I just need to know where to start and what I should be buying and where.

I have had the same problem it sounds like, I bought a Master cylinder for about 50 bucks, easily a 30-40 min job, just a few bolts and a pin behind the clutch pedal. The real problem looked like where the cylinder rod comes through the firewall it was rusted and thus grinding away at the gromet holding it in the firewall, hence leaking fluid all over your nice carpet, and possibly down the back of the clutch pedal, rusting it too.

The clutch hydraulic system has a problem-either the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder on the bell housing may be at fault.

If the brake fluid is low in the clutch master cylinder reservoir, there may be a leak to the outside. Refill and check for leaks while someone pumps the clutch pedal. Check around the clutch master cylinder (also under the dash- if wet there around the top of the clutch pedal or if wet on the carpet below the pedal, the master cylinder is leaking.) Check the single line from the clutch master to the bell housing where the slave cylinder is. If no leaks found, likely the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder has failed internally.

Is it safe: there won't be any further damage caused by running it, but if shifting gets harder and harder to do, that may cause a driveability problem.

Check the level in the clutch master cylinder. If the fluid is brake fluid from the clutch cylinder, you will have to replace the clutch master cylinder. When bad, it is common for them to leak into the car and drip fluid on the carpet.
If you have the tools and so inclined, you can change it yourself. Not very hard,. 2 bolts hold it to the firewall, the pin or clip holding the clutch pedal rod to the cylinder (under the dash), then remove the steel line on the cylinder. (The steel line goes down to the transmission, to the little slave cylinder. After new master cylinder is installed, you need to bleed the slave cylinder to get air out of the lines.)

No, you don't have to replace the clutch. The fluid on the passenger side sounds like where your slave cylinder is? But it may be fluid running down the outside of the line to there...because I think the problem is your clutch master cylinder. The fluid on the pedal is the reason. Feel the carpet behind the pedal and all around there for wetness. If it is clutch fluid, your master cylinder will have to come off for repair or replacement. Any time you have fluid there, it's a sure sign of clutch master cylinder failure.
Whether it's the master or the slave cylinder (or both), you should be able to handle it. The master cylkinder is a little more difficult than the slave to replace, but doable. Remove the line fitting, 2 bolts holding cylinder to firewall, and inside the car is the clutch rod from the pedal to the cylinder that needs removing. That's about it. After you get the system free from further leaking, all you need to do is bleed the slave cylinder so your clutch works again.

you most likely have a hydraulic clutch, which the clutch master cylinder is located on the firewall on the driverside close to your drivers side windsheild.it takes brake fluid to fill dot brake fluid will fill it properly. however if your slave cylinder on the transmission is leaking,this will require a replacement of the clutch slave cylinder. look for leakage under passenger side,,just under or below passenger side seat onto ground. recommend if you replace the clutch slave cylinder,you also replace clutch master cylinder located on the drivers side firewall at wind sheild.look under the car while someone pumps the clutch in and out,if you see brake fluid leaking under car onto ground or inside onto carpet at brake pedal,you have a bad clutch master cylinder. recommend you replace both slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder. this will save you lots of time and headaches. thank you for choosing fixya.com

My 1994 Nissan Altima's clutch is leaking fluid and the clutch goes all the way down to the floor, it will not go into gear


The solution is pretty cut-and-dry. Fix the fluid leak and your transmission will go into gear. I don't know what to tell you to fix exactly because I do not know where it is leaking from. If it is leaking from the slave cylinder, replace the slave cylinder; If it is leaking from the master cylinder, replace the master cylinder, etc.

Fixing just one part of the clutch may not be the best option for you however. Clutch parts seem to wear out all within a few thousand miles of one-another. Depending on how many miles are on your vehicle you may want to do a complete clutch replacement so you won't have any further clutch problems for several years.

Are the brake master cylinder and the clutch slave cylinder interconnect in some way? I'm told that the slave cylinder get its fluid from the master cylinder.


The brake system and the clutch master cylinder have the same fluid tank, look at the brake master cylinder fluid tank, on the right hand side about half way up is a hose that goes over to the clutch master cylinder, if fluid level is not above this hose the clutch will stop functioning. If the clutch slave cylinder, mounted on the front side of transmission bellhousing, leaks then the clutch will stop functioning. The slave cylinder has a bleed screw, check these items and fill and bleed as neccessary. Hope this helps, let me know.

Im having to add break fluid for my clutch daily on jeep wrangler


Check around the slave valve under the car on the tranny.
There is only 3 places it could leak
The clutch master cylinder
the pipe from the master cylinder to the slave valve
or the slave valve.

Hydraulic clutch is leaking.


if the oil is leaking on the ground it is the slave if no oil on floor then the master is leaking the master leaks oil inside the car pull the carpet back where the pedals are to see if oil is leaking down

Clutch or master problem?


CHECK FOR ANY LEAKS STARTING AT MASTER CYLINDER THEN CHECK SLAVE CYLINDER AT G/BOX IF OK THEN BLEED CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER OR SLAVE CYLINDER MIGHT HAVE WORN SEALS IN THEM THOUGH SO PARTS MIGHT NEED REPLACED.

it could be either, look at your master cylinder in engine bay and look for leaks, if you find none look inside the car up under the clutch pedel, check for fluid seeping around where the pedel arm goes thru firewall and possibly under carpet
