I have a saginaw 4 speed that i would like to put in a 73 camaro. The motor is a 350 with about 360 hp. the car has 410 gears.I have heard this transmission is not very strong is this true? if this is true can it be rebuilt to make it stronger . And if so what needs done. Not planning on racing just some street fun. Thanks Gary

what do you mean cannot get clutch to engage
can you get gears with out slashing them,

Who really knows? I work at a shop and 30% of the parts we get are wrong. This is from people that are supposed to know the parts. All you can really do is match it with the old one.

The chevy s-10 pick up, GMC Jimmy, chevy Astor van would have a rear end that would line up and fit.

From this chart - I think you may be misreading the number - 3970010 is possibly the actual number: Which makes the engine pretty old 68-72 350 V8 - 4 bolt main. I included past this number so that you can see that the number you posted doesn't actually exist. And thus my conclusion that the 9 is most likely a 0. Go to napa or autozone and ask. I do know that the 73 - 89 axles take the exact Gear Oil that is put into the SM465 Bulldog 4 Speed Manual Transmission as well as the NP205 from 1973 GMC Super Custom 2500 4x4 rigs

You can change the ratio back to 4.10. However, if you do not already have the specialty tools required to do the job, you will likely be better off finding a shop that will change the gears for you. A mistake as simple as incorrect backlash will result in destroyed ring & pinion gears.

Your cheaper options will be :
1. Find a matching rear-end with 4.10 gears and swap it in.
2. Purchase the ring and pinion, master install kit, and find a friend that has installed gears before to help you out.
3. Find a 4x4, Hotrod or auto shop that is will swap the gears for you. If the axle is in the car, it's usually more expensive than if you carried the axle in for them to work on.
4. Purchase R&P, Master install kit, all the required tools. Then hit the books to find the proper procedure and measurements for that axle.

The u-joints could cause the banging when you put it in gear. You might want to check the kick down cable. If it's out of ajustment it can cause the hard shift. The transmission thinks the motor is going faster then what it is and will shift harder. Put the car up on jack stand in the rear and put the tranny in neutral.turn the drive shaft back and forth with your hand and see if you hear the clunk or bang you heard when you put it in gear. if not then I would go with the kick down cable being to tightor to short on ajustment. However you want to look at it.

when it jerks does the check engine light come on? If so find a reputable transmission shop and it is a simple fix. Costed me $88

your cheapest bet is to go with a different gear ratio in the rear diff(the lower the ratio the higher speed and less rpm) but if your truck has a 3 speed automatic you can put a 4 speed with overdrive (700r4 would be the best)
is your truck 2wd or 4wd?

Lower the rearend gear ratio to at least 3:73 this will help alot on the low end.If you run 1/8 mile you could go to 3:90 or 4:11. Just watch your rpm.
