Question about 1995 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

The driver's door of my 1995 Mk3 Golf flew opem going around a corner. The door will not close properly now and it needs a lot of effort with both the key and pushing down the door button to get the lock to engage, but the door doesn't close snugly or lock fully. The car has mechamical locke (i.e. not central locking). Any ideas on what I need to do?

  • First thing is to check for wear on the door hinges....It sounds like the door lock mechanism may also have been damaged....

Here's what we have to do for the first part of the job....Open the door, wind down the window and try lifting and lowering the door and watch for any movement between the door and the body....The two should move together with no play between them....If there is play you'll need to replace the hinges....

start with the one at the bottom of the door and loosen it, Once that's been done , you;ll need a friend to hold the door supporting it Remove from the body side of the hinge and not the door. There will be three bolts holding each hinge....

Once removed from the body, the door attachments can be removed.

When replacing the door it will require adjustments which can be carried out on the body part of the hinges....which should be tightened only sufficiently for the adjustments to be carried out....

Once you are satisfied, they can then be tightened to full tightness. This will also require the help of a friend, to support the door.

If the locking mechanism also needs replacement after testing it let me know and then we'll go through the procedure, but its far more difficult than replacing the hinges, so be prepared....Best regards Johngee10

Mk3 golf when central locking is activted the electric windows go

you have just found this out.it is a standard feature of all vw/audi/seat/skoda cars
unlock/hold key over, the windows will go down
lock/hold key over the windows will go up
then unlock the car with the remote, car reset.
sit in car with engine on,switch off engine(do not open any door)driver can open/close any window(you can even put your hand into window frame and it will rollback, all on its(not for fun)
if windows rollback after you have used button to close them you may have sticky runners/rubbers.
this is not in the hand book, tell all your friends.....only a german car.....

Doors won't close

Stick a screw driver in where it would normally wrap around striker at door, pull handle and it should flip open there to allow closing. When working properly, it should snap back on its own when handle pulled so I'd give it lots of lube to see if it will start working properly.

Rear door won't stay shut

Check the latch mechanism on the door. There is a piece of the latch that closes around the clasp on the door frame. sometimes this closes when the door is open and you can't shut the door. Take a screw driver and flip this latch piece open and close the door.

How do I remove the interior door panel on my mk3 golf gti?

You will find hidden screws behind things like switch panels and handles and handle covers. after you have remove usually around 4-5 screws/bolts the panel will come off either by lifting it straight up or will have door panel plugs that you will pop straight out.

i had the same problem. After checking the window motor was not the problem i then checked the wiring harnes in the door. I beeped out all the connectors to make sure there were no broken wires and cleaned up all the contacts. The main connector looked quite corroded. I sprayed all the connectors with rust check and reassembled. The window is working fine now
