rear shoes are stuck to drums?

  • pajul Nov 16, 2008

I have a 2002 Hyundai that needs brake shoes on the back replaced. The problem is that the shoes are adjusted out and there is probably a built up ridge on the drum that will not allow me to pull off the drum.

The question is how can I loosen the shoes so the drum can be pulled off? There is no access to the star wheel to allow this operation…

I just can't get the drums off. (08 Accent). One rear is squeeking when brake is applied, car only has 23,000 miles. I was just going to use brake cleaner and see if that would help. Thanks...Joe

You only need to bleed the brakes if you disturb the hydraulics Changing the shoes alone DOES NOT necessitate bleeding.

Had no auto matic adjusting lever can I put new brake shoes without replacing adjusting lever on 1994 Hyundia excel rear brake driver side

The rear brake drums are drum brakes on the 94 excel. The Excel uses the front brakes the most, so are you sure you need to replace the rear brakes?

How do i remove the rear brake drums on a 1999 accent

Take off any hub caps and loosen the lug nuts (just loosen them) with the tire still on the ground it is way easier this way. Jack up the rear and set the car on stands as secure as you can, please be safe. Place chocks under the front wheels to keep it from moving off the stands. Finish removing the lug nuts and remove the rear wheels. Look on the outer edge of your brake drum for a punch slot, it is an oval looking indention in the drum that you punch out to access the rear brake adjusters. If you do not see this punch slot look on the rear back plate for a rubber cap that you can pry out with a screw driver. Inside will be the brake shoes adjusters, you have to back off the adjusters to get the drum off the axel. Once you have backed off the adjusters, you can use a hammer and hitting the drum on the front edge it should come loose now to access the brake shoes. Next work on one side at the time using the other side as your guide remove & replace the shoes . Put it back together.

How to change back brakes 1999 ford windstar, back brakes are grinding, brake light on

does it have rear disc brakes or drum brakes, if disc brakes should be changed just like the front and you might have an emergency brake shoe inside the rotor that they call a halo shoe, if it is drum brakes take off the adjusting spring and the return spring remove the brake adjuster, the the brake bar then remove the brake shoe hold down spring by holding the pin from the back and pushing and turning the spring to remove from the pin, you might have to remove the the emergency brake bar from one shoe by removing the horseshoe clip from the pin on the shoe if you have problems putting it back together look at the other side that you have not torn down yet.

Rear brake on 2002 hyundia accent

hi from uk after supporting car on stand or blocks ? remove wheel then you will see x head screwsx2 remove screws then release handbrake drum should now rotate freely you may need to lightly but firmly tap the drum off the hub if you have an old vac ? use it to vac the dust from shoes and drum ? if your shoes are ok ? then make sure the auto adjuster is free and clean? if your h/brake travel is high and the reason for checking brakes? then notch up auto adjuster a couple of clicks at atime whilst keep trying the drum fits so the shoes are just enabling rotation of drum by hand then press b/pedal a cople of times to centralise shoes to drum ? if drum still rotates freely with no binding on shoes ? then re assemble carry out same proceedure on other side ? do not adjust brake cable! unless you do adjustment as above you may/will find your h/brake is better /less travel ? also your foot brake will feel better and less travel ? hope this helps you but if you req further info/assistance by all means come back to board best wishes from lancashire uk
