Where can i find the chime module in a 95 explorer or where is the door close switch located \and what colour coding wire is it?

There are several different wires, colors being blk/w, grn/lt blu, and pnk/wht. If you are having problems with the seat belt staying on, then prob going to be the GEM (generic electronic module).

SOURCE: location of door chimes module

one of the doors is not closed completely or...... the button is stuck in the depressed position. try each door one at a time, shut each firmly and check the result or................ look inside the door frame when the door is open to see if the button is popped out(there is a button that looks like a stem in the door jam towards the hinge end of the door). if you find one that is stuck (pushed in as if the door was closed) then pop it out with your finger or small screw driver and then lubricate it with a few drops of oil.

Your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop that's good with automotive electrical problems . Checking for DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes would be a good first step . The GEM - generic electronic module is fords BCM - body control module . There is a door ajar switch located in each door , when a door is open the GEM module detects this an turns on the alarm (chime ,bing or what ever noise yours makes ) Also turns on the little car symbol showing a particular door as being open . You could have a GEM module problem , Or you could go to www.bbbind.com/ Find wiring diagrams an try to trouble shoot this yourself. There is no chime module ,there is a speaker inside the instrument cluster.
Door Ajar Chime
The door ajar chime feature is controlled by the smart junction box (SJB). The driver and passenger door ajar switches, and the liftgate are hardwired to the SJB. If any door or liftgate is sensed as being open, and the ignition switch is in RUN/START position, the SJB will process the input and sends a chime request to the instrument cluster over the controller area network (CAN).
Safety Belt Warning Chime
The safety belt chime feature is controlled by the restraints control module (RCM). The driver safety belt switch is hardwired to the RCM. The RCM communicates with the instrument cluster over a hardwire connection. If at any time during the first 6 seconds after the ignition switch is placed in RUN the driver safety belt is sensed as being unfastened, the RCM will process the input, and in turn, sends a chime request to the instrument cluster.
Have the vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ,not OBD 2 codes , the check engine light has nothing to do with this .

There isn't a chime module , built into instrument cluster !
Door Ajar Chime

98 Ford Explorer. No chime sounds when keys left in ignition and driver door open. Also no chime that lights are on. Passenger door chimes when opened and key in ignition.


Bad door switch, or it may be dirty and "stuck" in the recessed position as it would be when the door is closed. I find WD-40 or equal is a good solution for this. Otherwise the switch's connections are bad (corrosion) or the switch itself is bad. More extreme is a break in the wiring to the switch and or connection near the fuse.

NOTE: The generic electronic module/central timer module (GEM/CTM) is connected to the ISO link and is diagnosed through the data link connector (DLC) with a scan tool.
There are five warning chimes and lamps the GEM/CTM controls: headlamps operating without the ignition on (chime only), door ajar (chime and lamp), key-in-ignition (chime only), driver seat belt warning (chime and lamp), and message center.

When the is turned to RUN or START from OFF or ACC, the chime will sound for six seconds or until the safety belt is buckled.
The will turn on for 60 seconds or until the driver safety belt is fastened. Both the chime and the lamp turn on at the same time.
If the safety belt is buckled before the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START, from OFF or ACC, neither the chime nor lamp will be activated.
Anytime the is changed to RUN from START while the safety belt warning indicator is activated, the safety belt warning indicator will remain activated until either the timing sequence has been executed or the safety belt is buckled.
When at least one door is ajar and the key is in the RUN position, the door ajar cluster lamp is activated and remains on until all doors are closed. A warning tone will sound once any time the key is in the ignition switch and any door is open.
The key-in-ignition warning will sound when the driver side is opened with the key in the and the in OFF or ACC. It will continue to sound until the key is removed, the is closed, or the is in RUN or START.
The headlamp-on reminder chime will be activated if the headlamps or parking lamps are on, the key is not in the ignition switch, and the driver door is opened.
A single tone will be provided each time a ground signal is received from the message center. A one-second tone will sound for warning indications from the message center. A 100 milli-second tone will sound for each message center button depressed.

the door jam switch is located on the door latch very hard to see but may be visible with a compact mirror it is a single wire unit sorta round about 1 inch long

Power Output Diagnostic Mode
You may use a power output diagnostic mode in the multifunction alarm module in order to run a quick test on the operation of the following outputs:
• The courtesy lamps control
• The inadvertent power control
The power output diagnostic mode activates after you perform all of following actions:
• Close all of the doors.
• Set the park brake.
• Turn the ignition switch to RUN.
Before 15 seconds pass, perform the following steps:
• Open the right front door.
• Cycle the headlamp switch from OFF to PARK three times.
During a normal operation, the multifunction alarm module will flash the interior lamps until the ignition switch turns OFF. If an internal short occurs in the multifunction alarm module, the module will chime in the following patterns:
• One chime every 3 seconds implies an inadvertent output failure.
• Two chimes every 3 seconds implies a courtesy output failure.

I would look into the door jam switch 1st , make sure have a good connection and also the wiring itself, since it goes through the pillar might have a cut or worn wire.

Where is the door chime on a1995 mercury grand marquis


It's the same as the lights left on and the key in door open its called the generic eletronic module and it's in the dash to the right of the steering collum. Why do you want to know as all kinds of things are run by this device and it costs plenty. If it keeps chimbing and you want to stop it all kinds of things don't work with it unplugged ( interior light's cruise control, air conditioner and heat,Radio,Automatic headlights. Daytime running lights) If its saying the doors open, it is! Just because it looks closed doesn't mean that they are the most likly is the driver door and the switch is in the door latch that holds the door closed. The switches rust break fall off or get disconnected. worset problem is the wire from the switch breaks in the door hinge area and the wire will need to be found and replaced or repaired. The modules seldom fail unless submererised in water or the battery hooked up backwards or jumped off wrong battery cable removed while the engine in running but alot of this other stuff will work wrong too.

Warning Chime Systems The generic electronic module (GEM) will sound the following warnings:
  • key-in-ignition warning
  • safety belt warning
  • headlamp switch ON warning
  • door ajar warning

Headlamp Switch On Warning The generic electronic module (GEM) sounds when the driver door is opened while the headlamp switch (11654) is in the PARK or HEAD position, and continues to sound at a rate of 4 chimes per second until the headlamp switch is turned off or the driver door is closed.
  • When the headlamp switch is in the PARK or HEAD position, power is supplied through Circuit 293 (O/R) to the GEM.
  • When the driver door is open, the driver door open warning lamp switch (10B997)is closed and ground is supplied to the generic electronic module (GEM).
A delayed headlamps on repetitive chime will sound for a period of three seconds beginning twenty seconds after the key is turned to OFF, LOCK or ACC, the headlamp switch is in the PARK or HEAD position, and the driver door is closed. Delayed headlamps on is terminated by opening and closing the driver door again.

Door/Liftgate Ajar Warning The door/liftgate ajar warning functions as follows:
  • The generic electronic module (GEM) sounds a warning tone for one second when any vehicle door, liftgate window or the liftgate is ajar without any other door already open and the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  • Power is then supplied through Circuit 627 (BK/O) to the door ajar warning indicator lamp which remains illuminated until all doors are closed or the ignition switch is no longer in the RUN position.

Key-in-Ignition Warning The generic electronic module (GEM) sounds when the LH front door is opened with the key in the ignition switch and continues to sound until the key is removed or the door is closed.
  • When the key is in the ignition switch, the ignition key warning switch terminal and wire (11A128) is closed and ground is supplied through Circuit 158 (BK/PK) to the generic electronic module (GEM).
  • When the LH front door is open, the LH front door open warning lamp switch (10B997) closes and ground is supplied through Circuit 57 (BK) to the generic electronic module (GEM).

Safety Belt Warning When the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START from the OFF or ACC position and remains in RUN or START, the chime will sound for six seconds or until the safety belt is buckled. The safety belt warning indicator lamp (10C859) will turn on for 60 seconds, or until the LH front safety belt is fastened. Both the chime and lamp activate at the same time. If the safety belt is buckled when the ignition key is turned to RUN or START from OFF or ACC, the lamp will prove out for two seconds, but chime will not be activated. Any time the key is changed to RUN from START while the safety belt warning indicator is activated, the safety belt warning indicator will remain activated until either the timing sequence has been executed, or the safety belt is buckled.
