Question about 2000 Alfa Romeo 156

2 Answers

Hi I have just bought my 156 selespeed it is very jumpy in slow traffic (foot on and off accelerator), and when you stop it selects neutral, and when selecting first your got about 1/2 second to take off, and if your not quick enough it goes back to neutral. Very hard to drive. This does not seem right. Cheers Doug

Hi my 156 selespeed is very jumpy in reverse sepecially going slow trying to park. Forward is not to bad and it will stay in gear when stopped, until it warms up or after about 10 minutes it selects neutral straight away. To take off you need to select first and accelerate instantaneously or it goes back to neutral after you have learched forward. The vehicle behind thinks you have taken off.very scarey. Iam sure Alfa wouldn't make a gearbox like this.
    Cheers

The Selespeed essentially consists of a standard mechanical transmission, with dry monodisk clutch and synchronised mechanical gear, all moved by hydraulic power pistons. If you have problems with it then the fault is either in the hydraulics - the oil pressure is too low - or the syncros in the gearbox are worn out.
If it's the first one then you will have to test and replace the oil pump, if it's the second then the gearbox will have to be taken out of the car, dismantled and fully refurbished. Both are a job for a shop, and the second one will be very expensive.

Doug,
The gear selector seems to be having problems. It needs repair by a competent mechanic. Please have it done to get a smooth ride.

I have a 2001 Alfa 147 selespeed, you have to keep your foot on the brake or accelerator otherwise it goes to neutral immediately. Is this normal it my first tiptronic and i'm dumb! Please help.

this is a manual car with an electric clutch (no pedal)so if you dont have your foot on one of the pedals it will roll down the hill...this is infinitly more economical than a standard auto box.(fluid drive).and if you want you can change gears like a manual car, good eh....

My alfa 156 selespeed wont go into third gear it just revs

Third is either striped out on the shaft or the shift arm is worn out. Either way it must come out. With that type of car, you don't want to take it to an amature who says "I always wanted to work on a transamision"

Hope you can find someone who knows what they are doing. Transmission experts are becoming rare.

Gears change without a command from the driver.

There is a vacuum controlled selector valve on the selespeed alfa's it tricky to get at and expensive to replace. Have it sent to an alfa specialist or main dealer and they ll sort it
