I have the same problem, only after it rains. i have to maually override the shifter with a screwdriver for a couple of days, then it works fine again. Something to do with the back brakelights and the wiring. My service guy says he can run a bypass wire directly to the emergency brake light and correct the issue.

Cannot shift into park

The park lock pin may be sticking on the steering column, go under the column and unbolt the park lock solenoid and see if the shifter moves to park.

Why will my truck will not shift out of park but can move the shifter

Tranny Brake Lock Switch has gone out and you have now broken it forcing it out of park. It's part of the steering column and needs special tools for replacement. you have to send it to a shop. Good Luck

Column shifter does not make the gears change, indicator moves from P to D and nothing happens

Sounds like your cable has broken or come off on the side of the transmission this is your problem it snaps off and on under the vehicle. and if the linkage is intact and moves it is the electronic module on the side of the transmission behind the shift cable.Remember to rate my solution and give testimonial this is how i earn my achievements here on FixYa Thanks in advance if you need further help just ask

My 2001 Oldsmobile Alero won't shift out of park.

Before you go too far, your problem might be as simple as mine was. The gear shift knob had slipped and was not down far enough on the shaft to engage the release mechanism.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park

This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

When car is in any gear. park, reverse nuetral and drive the gear shifter on dash shows the gear always in PARK

there is a small cable/string attached to the steering column part of the shifter. when you move the shifter it pulls the cable/string, which moves the lever in the cluster on the PRNDL display. basically look carefully at where the shifter base is and you should find the cable/string thing, and reattach it.

Can't remove key from ignition,it's an 02 grand prix, everything works right just can't pull out the key

I'm guessing your gran prix is a floor shifter?
if so, sitting in drivers seat have car running, put your foot on the brake, and move the shifter to first gear, while you are doing this watch the steering cover behind the steering wheel rotate also.when you see the column cover moving bring the shifter back to the park position, while watching which way the column is rotating, when you get to park put your hand around the bottom of that rotating column cover and turn it up further and remove your key.the shifter cable needs to be adjusted some

Gear shifter does NOT shwitch from park and break

SHIFTER LOCKED IN PLACE

  1. Remove the instrument panel cover below the steering column, then remove the steering column shrouds to gain access to the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid. The solenoid is part of the interlock cable assembly.
  2. Disconnect the wire connector from the rear of the BTSI solenoid.
  3. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ON position.
  4. With the brakes applied, try moving the shifter out of the PARK position.
    • If the lever now moves freely in and out of PARK, perform the Circuit Test below.
    • If the shift lever still does not move from the PARK position, remove the BTSI solenoid from the shift lever assembly. If the shift lever now moves freely in and out of the park position, the BTSI solenoid is faulty and the interlock cable must be replaced. If the shift lever still does not move from the park position, the problem is in the shift lever assembly or the ignition interlock cassette
