Go under the from of the car, right behind the engine and transmission, bolted to the subframe is the rack. The tie rods from each front tire run to it. Also the steering column. The rack will be bolted to the topside of the subframe strut, not the bottom where it would get hit by road debris

Center a rack and pinion from under the dash

yes you possibly can ( depends on the room available.)
I would do the centring at the top of the rack and pinion as this is where a multi spline is that will allow for correct centring.
when you get the shaft off the box
firstly turn the rack from lock to lock ( wheels of the ground) and position the shaft at the midpoint of the turns counted fro left to right
next with the steering wheel place it in the straight ahead position
put the shaft back on the rack and tighten up the lock bolt

My 2003 ford focus lost it's power steering, mechanic replaced the rack and pinion thing - lost steering again and now the mechanic says it is the power steering pump. The rack and pinion was replaced...

if the rack and pinion was not leaking or causing problems. then he may of made a wrong move! if the rack was fine before, and you just lost power steering. then it is most likely the power steering pump or the lines that go from rack to the pump. good-day ! if a rack goes bad, you will get a bad steering problem or just bad steering.

Play in steering wheel

Either a worn rack or a loose steering wheel bolt. Probably time for a new steering rack though. have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth slightly while you watch the steering linkage where it enters the rack; if the linkage is moving along with the wheel the problem is in the rack.

Mitsubishi l200 animal 2006 leaking oil from steering rack

Its most likely a seal on the power steering rack by the age it will most likely just be a seal they are about £7 in UK but possible the rack is goosed although I doubt it, please be careful using the car as it can lock the steering in position, and,,,, well you get it.

Steering sticking when turning had new steering rack/ pump goes very heavy have to wiggle steering to release so can drive

Faulty steering rack command.
The command vamve is fixed on the steering column with a pin. That pin is probabily broken.

If you open the rack yourself, be very carefully. It's fine precision parts.
Or, have a good rack from your reseller under warranty.

What do you have to do to remove rack and pinion from a 86 camry

If the car has power steering you need to disconect the hydraulic lines on the rack that lead to the power steering pump. You will need to disconnect each tie rod from the steering knuckle, this could take a tool called a pickel fork, be careful not to ruin the rubber boots. Next center the steering wheel and disconnect the steering shaft from the rack. The last thing should be the mounting bolts that mount the rack to the sub-frame. The rack should drop down and out.
