I have a 1997 buick lesabre and the speedometer is reading way too high. Is there any way to fix this without replacing the whole unit?

What whole unit? You replace the VSS Sensor (speed sensor) only if it failed

Thank you, pczapp. We asked this for my father-in-law. Also, do you know where I can find service manual type instructions online for doing this work?

Your best bet is to go to a transmission repair shop.
The sensor should be on the outside of the transmission case
Again, don't replace anything based on my guess, have things tested first

Possible ground wire fault with dash board unit. If it is a cable operated spedo, the cable end (small square cap) may be rounding off on one end.
