Question about 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

3 Answers

We took our monte carlo in to a certified auto mechanic shop because the timing belt needed to be changed. They quoted us $700 and then said the pullys needed changing as well as the spark plugs because it would be a big job to change them later. The second quote was $1400. They went ahead and did the work. They said they started it up and it was running rough so they took it for a spin up University Way, about 5 kms where it stopped and had to be towed back to their shop. They did a compression test and found two valves to be bent. My question is, "is it reasonable to be told that we brought the car in with bent valves? Our daughter uses this car to drive to school and when she got there three weeks ago, it just quit. It cranked but would not catch. She had not experienced any problems with it prior to this event. The motor has approximately 86000 km on it. My email is msabatino@shaw.ca

Msabatino.
It appears they messed up in the timing belt change.
If the car was running well when you took it in for a maintainence timing belt change and not after the work was performed they did the damage.
Valves get bent when the camshaft and the crankshaft are out of time with one another. Exactly the job they were supposed to do.
If the engine was running rough when they started it I suspect it was out of time by a couple of teeth on the belt. And because the job wasn't done proper it slipped on the test drive and the valves hit the pistons.
I hope they do the right thing for you and repair the damage they caused.
I wish you well on this.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Rereading the original question I see that the car had quit.
If you had to tow the vehicle to the shop it is entirely possible that the valves were already bent..
They should have told you of this possibility before they started the work.

I assume the timing belt broke or the cam gears jumped a couple teeth, before your repair shop did all the recent work
So yes, the valves could have gotten bent
The repair shop should have checked that, or they didn't time the new belt correctly ( It could happen) and they caused the issue.
When I read your question again--I think they caused it,you can't prove it though.
You do a cylinder leak down test, not a compression test

My monte carlo is shifting hard

my 2003 had the same problem it turned out to be the shift selinoids, in the trans, shop wanted $700 bucks to fix,you need to see if it is the same problem and get fixed now before you cause damage to the trans. my son and i did them, it was quit a job and around $150 bucks cost (selinoids and fluid and there was a seal in the pan for the axel also, the pan gasket may be able to be resued its metal with ruber inserts) we had to drop the engine and trans cradle and remove the wheel and axel to get to the side trans. pan off and the selinoids only took 5 mins to change, and put back together, most of the labor was in time spent getting to them apart and back together, this solved the problem and trans has been fine ever since, ( FIRST thing we did ) changed trans fluid before we did the selenoids in hopes that would fix it but ti did'nt so we then did the above work after the fluid change just and added cost, i would take your car to a shop and see what they say first,my car did not show any codes when i had this problem,it now has 155,000 miles and no trans problems. hope this points you in the right direction.

2001 Monte Carlo - brakes squeal "whistle"

Actually - I had the same problem and replaced my brakes 4 times in a year. YES 4 TIMES because of the whistling. I switched from metallic to ceramic pads and works like a charm! Ceramic will not allow the noise, plus I have found to have much better control over braking and short distances.
