Question about 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
NO FIRST OF ALL YOU NEVER NEED TO REPLACE PULLEYS THERE MAID OF METAL THE BELT IS RUBBER THE REASON THE VALUES ARE BENT IS THEY DIDN;T INSTALL TIMEING BELT CORRECTLY THERE ARE TIMING MARKS ON CAM AND CRANKSHAFT GEARS THATS THE OLNY WAY VALVES CAN BE BENT DONE PAY THEM AND REPORT THEM TRY TO SUE IF YOU DID THEY ARE LIEING TO YOU C CONTACT ME PIER.J@SBCGLOBAL.NET I;LL GIVE YOUMORE INFORMATION

It appears they messed up in the timing belt change.
If the car was running well when you took it in for a maintainence timing belt change and not after the work was performed they did the damage.
Valves get bent when the camshaft and the crankshaft are out of time with one another. Exactly the job they were supposed to do.
If the engine was running rough when they started it I suspect it was out of time by a couple of teeth on the belt. And because the job wasn't done proper it slipped on the test drive and the valves hit the pistons.
I hope they do the right thing for you and repair the damage they caused.

I assume the timing belt broke or the cam gears jumped a couple teeth,before your repair shop did all the recent work
So yes, the valves could have gotten bent
The repair shop should have checked that, or they didn't time the new belt correctly ( It could happen) and they caused the issue.
When I read your question again--I think they caused it,you can't prove it though.
You do a cylinder leak down test,not a compression test
