The check engine light coming on indicates that a "trouble code" has been set by the onboard computer and is stored in it's memory. There is a wide range of possible causes, such as bad sensor(s), wiring faults, leaking or disconnected vacuum line(s), out of acceptible range engine environmental variables... Some manufacturers even program the light to come when the maintenance schedule calls for service! (a clever ploy!)
The good news is that most of the larger auto parts stores now offer free computer diagnostic scans, where they can read the trouble code and reset/clear the check engine light. Some causes are a LOT more serious than others, so act accordingly on the indicated problem... and some causes are merely "glitches" in the system when there really is nothing wrong!
Hope this is helpful, and good luck with the Passat... nice car!

If you could repost your comment as a new problem (under the brakes sub-category) and do so by going to my profile and clicking on the "ask me" button, you will be put into my "my askers" and I'll work on getting you an answer.

In that post, let me know if you have ABS brakes, and are you seeing any MILs (Malfunction Indication Lights) on the dash display.

    Thanks!

My 2001 VW Beetle started losing speed when I go up a hill, and when I try to excellerate, it bogs down worse and the check engine light flashes off and on.

you sound like your catylitic converter is trying to stop up. When this happens check and have someone race the engine and fill and see if you have a good flow of exhaust coming out of your tail pipe and see if it is real hot .A good way is if it happens at night look at yourn converter and see if its red from the converter to the engine thats a sure sign thats your converter is stopped up.If its not then if the light stays on go to an advance store or some other place and they wont charge you to check and tell you what the obd 2 code is and post that back and let me know what the code is .Hope This Helps

I own a 2001 VW Passat Wagon.3.0 liter, 6 cyl., 30 valve engine. The 'check engine' light and 'emissions workshop' messages came on and I need to know what the problem could be.

most autoparts stores will run the check engine light for you for free....I am assuming that you either have a clogged catalytic converter, or your o2 sensor is throwing a fault....have autozone check it out and post back.

2001 vw jetta gs :check engine light goes on and off

sounds like a faulty sensor tripping and reconnecting.. the next time the light comes on, take it to an advance auto store or an auto zone, they can read your codes for free... this will tell you what is being tripped, that way you know exactly what you need to get checked and/or fixed instead of a mechanic poking around trying to find everything thats NOT wrong. but if you are not expeiriencing any difficulty with the car, you should be fine. the check engine light actually means alot less than most people think. its usually a transmission or emissions sensor, or even as simple as leaving your gas cap off after filling and then driving for awhile.

if you have a pd engine and you say that it miss fires i would change the wire loom to the injectors if it persists the air flow meter is on the blink, has you car ever gone into a limp mode status were you couldn't rev then check your turbo ,this may sound strange but just had a 150bhp tdi which was remapped with a very simular problem

Dear Customer,

1
check your sensors 1st,all sensors must be good

2
if all sensors are working good than check your engine firing sequence, some times happens when sequence was wrong,

3
check your exhaust and carborator tuning pin that creates the batter combination for firing in bore for batter performance & less emitions ,so check is it ok or not than go to your nearest service center that havad certified mechanics,

till you read this you had solve this problem definatly,
