Question about Dodge Stratus

Love i look up car runs but wont accelerate and i found some interesting stuff. it said the mass airflow sensor could be bad or came disconnected. this is on the air filter houseing or the tube coming from it.

I believe its on the side of the canaster, it could also be your tps, check it out. another good one is those wonderfull vaccum lines they love causeing problems like that. good luck

Yes, a dirty or bad mass airflow sensor can cause a car to run badly. I had a 1999 Mazda Protege that had this problem. You can get a can of mass airflow sensor cleaner from an auto parts store. Be careful to hold the can a few inches away from the wires so as not to break anything. Mass Airflow Sensors are fragile. Let it dry before putting it back in the car. If your car has the check engine light on, they can check the code for your as well. I have a 98 Nissan Frontier. It wasn't running right so I unplugged the maf sensor and it ran better. I bought a new one from eBay. Replaced it and now it's running worse than before

I rmv plug & coil on #6 cylinder in 08 DTS. When put bk correctly w no damage motor hd vibe, lack of pwr trans wldnt shift smoothly Code = misfire #5 cyl. Put new plug & coil in #6 still bad Help!


Sounds like you have an air measurement issue either a vacuum leak or a out of calibration Mass airflow sensor try disconnecting the electrical connector at the mass airflow sensor with the key off then run the vehicle with the sensor unplugged if you symptoms improve your mass airflow sens is bad if no change get a vacuum gauge on it you should have at least 19" of vacuum at idle if you dont or the needle is bouncing around you have a vacuum leak or bad intake valve also test compression on a known good cylinder like num 1 and num 5

Is the metal flap on Maf sensor on 92 Lexus es300 supposed to move with gas pedal if car is not running? Will a bad maf cause no apart or a no start condition?


No. The metal flap in the mass aiflow sensor is not connected to the throttle control. The air moving through the mass airflow sensor moves the flap. The flap works a variable resistor inside the mass airflow sensor. The more (and faster) the air is that moves through the sensor, the farther the flap will move...that is how it measures how much air is entering the engine....that is what a mass airflow sensor does.

A bad mass airflow sensor can cause all kinds of fuel control problems that can range anywhere from a hesitation on acceleration to a complete engine no-start condition.

When you unplug the mass airflow sensor, the car goes into "limp home" mode in which it runs full rich. Generally speaking, if a car runs better with the mass airflow sensor unplugged than with it plugged in, the mass airflow sensor has failed.
However, the drifting idle tends to make me want to look for vacuum leaks and check the rear temperature sensor on the driver side of the head. I suspect that running over-rich is compensating for the vacuum leak so the car keeps running.
If you have a propane torch or a can of diesel starting ether, spray it around the intake manifold while the car is idling and see if the engine speeds up. If so, then you have found a vacuum leak.
If it were mine, I would buy a new intake manifold gasket and replace it as a routine maintenance item. It is not expensive or difficult to replace except that if you are like me, you WILL drop at least one nut, and there are several great hiding places on that side of the engine where the nuts go to hide when you drop them. You will need a magnet to recover them. You don't need to pull the manifold clear off, you just have to pull it clear of the bolts so you can slip in a new gasket. You can leave the throttle cables and most of the other connections hooked up
If you know how to use an ohm meter, you might consider getting a manual for this car and looking up the appropriate resistance/temperature values and checking that rear temperature sensor.
While you are replacing that intake manifold gasket, check all the vacuum ports to make sure they are clear, and check all the vacuum hoses to make sure they are intact. Also check the tubes between the mass airflow sensor and the throttle body for cracks. While you have those air tubes off, clean the throttle body and the idle air control valve with some carb cleaner. Spray a little carb cleaner through the mass airflow sensor as well. Actually, there is a special spray for cleaning mass airflow sensors that is more gentle, but I have used carb cleaner on them many times with no apparent ill effects.
If it turns out that the mass airflow sensor has failed, that will run some $$, but having a fresh intake manifold gasket and clean throttle body and no vacuum leaks will be worth your time and money and make the car run better when you are done.

Hi, i have a 1999 bmw 323i and the is not giving me the performance as usual, it wont pick up speed fast, if am going 50mh and i press the break and than press on the gas it wont respond fast at all even...


A few classic possibilities here. First your throttle body sensor may be bad. Second your mass airflow sensor may be bad. Third your fuel regulator may be on the blitz. Also, if your oxygen sensor is going bad you may feel a slow response to your acceleration. My best bet is that your mass airflow sensor is going bad. Please have your car diagnosed at the nearest AutoZone for free.

Sorry, for the slow response. That sensor your refferring to
is the MASS Airflow Sensor,which seems to be bad. Take the
sensor off the air intake hose and see if anything is stuck in the
element. It is very delicate,so be careful. Reconnect it and if you have a digital multimeter,check to see if the voltage across the
power side is no more than 5 volts. I'm betting it's bad. Good luck.

Always replace with a new or working used one. I have never heard of rebuilding a MAF sensor!!

You shouldn't run with the mass airflow sensor disconnected. That's probably the problem. Is it bad or shy is the mass airflow sensor disconnected?
