SOURCE: Is $265.00 too much for

That is high for the pump but the labor cost is fair. These repair shops will zing you for the part and keep the labor costs down. The pump is inside the gas tank. You have to drop your tank and replace the fuel pump on top of the tank. It is really a nasty job. I found a pump for you that is a lot less money but you got to find someone to put it in. It's kind of like going to the local eatery and asking them to cook your own steak.
Here is the web site.
Good luck and thanks for your question and I hope my suggestions help. Don't forget to rate me.

Fuel pump is bad. How much to replace?

It depends where you get the pump and where you take it to have it done if you're not doing it yourself. The pump could cost anywhere from $150 - $550. If you take it into a shop to have it done, they could charge you 4 - 8 hours of labor so depending on their labor rate, labor alone could cost you $240 - $800. The gas tank has to be removed in order to replace the pump, that's why the labor would be so high. These cars have a fuel pump fuse and relay so I would definitely spend a little time to check those first before you spend a lot of money replacing the fuel pump itself.

Good Luck!

My sons 97 sonoma starts sometimes. The shop wants to replace the fuel pump assembly at a cost of 1,000.00. Seems like a high estimate what do you think?

Well the fuel pump for a 4 cylinder is about $270.00. Depending on there labor rate this may be a reasonable estimate but it does sound a little high. The six cylinder pump is around the same price. If you can find someone who knows how to drop the tank then you can eliminate some of your labor cost. So $740.00 for labor thats a rip off.
