I have the exact car w/same exact problem. I was told that ist was the speed sensor, which just so happens to be located inside the transmission w/a $400. repair bill.

first be sure that its the engine light and not the "service" light. the service light will usually illuminate if its time for an oil change. if its the service light ur owners manual should tell u how to reset it. if its ur engine light then try disconnecting ur positive battery cable for 1 minute. that should reset ur ecm and get rid of the engine light. if the engine light comes back on then have a diagnostic scan done to determine whats causing it. get a scan tool to retrieve the dtc (diagnostic trouble code).
you will get a misfire code.
p0301 for cyl 1
p0302 for cyl 2 and so on.
i can't recall if that engine has plug wires or coil on plug but if its coil on plug replace the coil corresponding to the cylinder misfire

Old adage is.....misses on a pull.....it's ignition. How old are spartk plugs and wiring?
The car is also old enough to have some vacuum lines getting broken or brittle.So check for vacuum leaks. don-ohio
