You need a scanner to clear the codes.

Please see my tip at These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Reset service light for a 2001 sunfire

Take it to any O'Riley auto parts store and they will reset it in seconds. Or you can pull the battery cables off for 10-15 minutes and that should do it also.

Go the Autozone and they will get for the code that cause your engine Light to come. This is very important to known..get the code sometimes it the gas cap is not on will sometime cause the service light to come on. If this is the case that you will have to put the cap back on the right way turning it until it kick about 3 times then you will have the drive around a while for computer reset and turn on the light. How do you reset the check engine light on a 2001 Pontiac sunfire after oil change

Well the check engine light is not on because the engine oil needs to be changed. The light is warning the driver the computer has found a problem that can affect performance and emissions.
The computer has to be scanned for trouble codes then the problem has to be fixed before the light can be turned off.

Best option is a scan tool or code reader.Alternatively you can disconnect the battery but if you have theft lock on your radio you may need to get the code to reactivate it.

2001 Pontiac Sunfire. Engine Warning light comes ...

When the light is on you need to pull the OBD codes with a code reader or go to an autopart store and have them do it. With that in mind ethanol changes the exhaust coming out of the engine, the ethanol causes the oxygen to be higher in the exhaust than is expected and the light comes on. You should have the codes checked to be sure. However there is no damage coming from this light, if that is the cause.
